So... Original or remake?

Well, it's like the title says: do you prefer the original or the remake? Below are some of my examples and why I feel the way I do. Feel free to comment on these or any others you might think up. Ok, here goes:

1)"Psycho" - The original is a classic, and almost perfectly follows the book. Hitchcock's style is nothing short of genius and Perkin's portrayal of the haunted and disturbed Norman Bates is spot-on. In the remake he does... naughty things....... (ew...)

2)"The Ring" - Well, the movies are radically different, and both pretty good. All the stuff that wasn't very good in the original is portrayed well in the American version, and vice versa. So, I'm going to have to go with the book, even with it's clunky Japanese-to-English translation.

3)"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" - Well, this is an interesting one- see, the remake isn't a very good movie, nor is it a particularly bad flick. It's even a little above average for a modern-day big-budget Horror film. The Problem comes in it's comparison to Tobe Hooper's classic. The original was just so good, so ground-breaking and ingenious, that the remake looks extremely bad and insulting to it's inspiration. The film-makers pulled a bad move by remaking "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," when their film would only need slight tweaking to stand alone as it's own piece. It would be a decent movie if they removed all refernces to the original.

Well, that's all I've got for now. Tell us your opinions on these and other remakes.

Especially the end scenes, with "Grandpa" and trying to hit the girl with the hammer. That screaming, constant screaming for the last half hour, made me want to throw the TV through the window. -
Date: 10/19/2004 1:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 25390    Psycho: You're right. Hitchcock cannot be duplicated well. He was the master of mind games. I hated the remake. 2) I have never seen either. 3) I refuse to watch the remake of Chainsaw Massacre. I can hardly watch the first one, knowing it is a true story.
Date: 10/19/2004 1:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 47218    Are you kidding? The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was GREAT! It is still creepy and effective to this day, and when you consider that it was done on a very small budget with no-name actors you appreciate the accomplishment even more. Nothing beats crazy hill-billies with meat hooks and chainsaws. I have a friend who lives out in rural Bastrop, where most of it was filmed, and it gives me the chills when I drive through there.
Date: 10/19/2004 3:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    Oddsmell, it was EXTREMELY LOOSELY based on something that happened. The real guy, Ed Gein, never even used meat hooks or chain saws. Silence of the Lambs was also based on the very same person. From that, you can see how loosely the movies played with real life.
Date: 10/19/2004 5:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 17081    Original TCM was better but the new one was good also. 1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. New Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre pt2 4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Leatherface pt3) 5.Texas Chainsaw Massacre New Generation 6. Ed Gein 7. Psycho
Date: 10/19/2004 7:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 62915    LOL i always laugh when people thin TCM was a true story!! Same with fargo. The cheeky directors said it was a true story but it wasn't. Not to mention blair witch project. LMBO!! Well that said and done. 1. Oiginal but I didn't think it was that great. The book would have been better. 2. Only seen the remake so I have to go with that 3. Only seen the remake but didn't think it was great. Lol maybe I wasn't concentrating but I didnt get the story line at the end. lol Ghost-Chick

Date: 10/20/2004 9:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 35160    i dont like any of the pyscho movies.thought all of them were lame.. i like the american version of the ring, havnt seen any other. and i dont like the texas chain saw massacres. i havnt seen them, just bits and peices. {he he } they just dont seem worth my time...
