Questions for Atheists...no debate...just questions ..HipChik

Honestly and truly - I am curious about a few things about Atheism. I am not looking to be an Atheist - I have always just wanted to know their point of view. I am not trying to preach to you, nor am I trying to turn this into a religious debate. I have always wanted to know these things, so please do not get angry at me for asking.

I am a Christian, but I have a very logicial mind. I struggle daily with my beliefs because I want to believe so bad. When I get this way, I always get very depressed, because in my mind if I do not believe in SOMETHING I feel there is no hope.

For all those who are Atheist - what exactly do you believe? Do you beleive that you die and there is nothing at all...just death? That is such a depressing thought to me -how do you handle that? I would be so afraid to die, if I didn't believe there was anything. How does this affect the way you live your life?

Do you consider Atheism a religion, or a lack thereof? Is it just a belief that there is no God, and then do you believe that there is reincarnation or something else?

Date: 10/19/2004 5:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 62118    I see death as inevitable event that everyone has or will experience. As for whats after, there are too many inconsistencies in the afterlife claims, I'll find out for my self when I reach that point.
Date: 10/19/2004 5:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 19869    im not too sure on the textbook way of describing an athiest either. to be honest im not sure whether i am one or not! but i dont beleive in a 'God' or all powerful spirit. i dont agree with all religions (although i'd like to point out that i do agree with a lot of their morals and the intended ways of life that they bring - for example simple things such as being nice to one another i dont think anyone would disagree with) but beleiving for example that God made the world, that God made us etc, i cant see how this is possible. i do beleive that when you die, you die and thats it, although i do sometimes have fantasies that maybe we do get re-incarnated or maybe we do move onto a spiritual plain... but i beleive that they are only my fantasies because i have nothing to base my wild imagination on. so i guess deep down i truely beleive when you die your dead thats the end no more bye bye... and how do i cope? whats their to cope with? thats life... im living my life... what more can i expect? live my life while i can, enjoy the best i can and get as much out of it as i can. be a nice person because i dont want to die thinking im a bad person or other people thinking that. i want to be remembered. thats how i beleive you 'live on'. you live in the memories and photo's of those who have loved you through your life. just as you love and will remember all of those people who come and go (or if ur lucky they stay) throughout your life. that is how i beleive poeple live on. i see christianity (please dont take this the wrong way or as a personal insult) as something that is not true, but gives the people that need or want it, the opertunity to beleive in something (i think everyone needs to beleive in something, whether its that life is life until death, or whether it be that you live your life to have yuor sins forgiven). and what they (christians) beleive in is good for them in the way that it encourages them to be nice and positive people. it also helps people cope with things like death, by giving them the beleif that death isnt the end, because people are naturally scared of the end. and i think the results of these beleifs are definately good, i just dont beleive that the way they are put across are true, and more of a fantasy. when i die, i die. it happens to us all. thats true. what we do with our life is up to us. when we die, all we take with us to our grave is whats in our head. if that is the beleif that we go to heaven or hell, then you can take that beleif with you. if you beleive that you take away many many good memories and lots of happiness, knowing in yourself that you lived a good life, then that is plenty of satisfaction for me to take to the grave. i think instead of being scared of death, i challenge death, in the way that life is the game, if my life will depend whether my death is good or bad. if you want to have metaphores (probably the wrong word to use) such as heaven and hell for these ideas, if it helps you to understand them, then there is nothing wrong with that. i hope this ramble helps you to understand atleast my thoughts a little better, although if u class me as an athiest then thats up to you, for im not sure myself.

Date: 10/19/2004 6:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 22275    Eddy brother are you agnostic
Date: 10/19/2004 7:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 8024    But first consider this. If a person opposes even the possibility of there being a God, then any evidence can be rationalized or explained away. It is like if someone refuses to believe that people have walked on the moon, then no amount of information is going to change their thinking. Satellite footage of astronauts walking on the moon, interviews with the astronauts, moon rocks...all the evidence would be worthless, because the person has already concluded that people cannot go to the moon. When it comes to the possibility of God's existence, the Bible says that there are people who have seen sufficient evidence, but they have suppressed the truth about God. On the other hand, for those who want to know God if He is there, He says, "You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you."
Date: 10/19/2004 7:48:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62876    Evil Eddy - here is my take on my religion. Even if I keep doubting, and keep forcing myself to believe, because the alternative to me is too depressing. I cannot bear to believe that we die and that is it, and that my loved ones are just dead! What is the point??? At least I will go through my life, with my 'forced' beliefs, and be comforted by them....do you know what I mean???...HC
Date: 10/19/2004 8:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 13119    just because someone doesn't believe in god doesn't mean that they don't believe in the after life. I personally feel that the one reason humans continue on in this screwy world is because they have hope, not religion, hope. Call it what you will but it is the believe that this is not the end we will move on to something else after we have served our time here.
Date: 10/19/2004 9:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 62118    CC28 - You're using the Bible to prove God, its nothing more than circular reasoning.
Date: 10/19/2004 10:06:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62876    Hi Magoo - That was one of the questions I asked in my post - Is it just a belief that ther eis no God, and then do you believe that there is reincarnation or something else? ...HC
Date: 10/19/2004 3:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 17081    I believe that when you die it will be just like how you remember things before you were even born. That you don't see, feel, hear anything. I wish I did believe but it's not that easy. You can't just decide to believe.
Date: 10/20/2004 7:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 13119    I believe that we are put on the earth to learn lessons, once you have learned what you have to, you leave and go onto the next level. I don't know if that is reincarnation or another place, I just know that as a human I have to believe that I will exist in one form or another longer than a life time. Otherwise what's the use? fight and struggle, love and hurt, end it all in 75 yrs. Can't see it.
