lol on my pants its on the right side, which is the side they are always supposed to be on. But I own two jean skirts that the button is on the left side and it is so awkward to do.....I hate it. Are your skirts like this? Is there a reason?

Date: 10/18/2004 2:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    hahaha maternity pants, no button!....just a big stretchy panal! I was always told the side of the button had to do with gender. Guys jeans on one side females another. Or is that just for shirts?

Date: 10/18/2004 2:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 58078    pants has to do with gender as well I'm pretty sure. Right now I'm wearing jeans and the button is on the right side
Date: 10/18/2004 3:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 8555    I'm pretty sure where the button is has to do with if it's a girl garment or a boy garment.

I got this on a website: Many of our contemporary clothing styles have their origins in the 19th century Victorian period as do our buttoning conventions. Some authors suggest that fashionable women at the time were dressed by others (and most people were right-handed). Thus women's clothing was designed to be fastened by a right-handed person FACING them, while men were assumed to dress themselves. Women were more likely to have maids to help them dress. To button a shirt or blouse, a right-handed person (most people are right handed) finds it more convenient to hold the button with the right hand and then push it through the buttonhole, which is held in the left hand. To make it easier for the maid, the buttons were changed on garments made for ladies of high society. Since the maid faced the lady while dressing her, buttons on the left simplified the matter. Thus left buttoning buttons and buttons in back made it easier for a maid to help with the dressing.
