Tonight we all went out to celebrate my two sisters and my mothers birthdays. We went to the Red Lobster for dinner, and were supposed to go out for desert, but the dinner was enough for us!
So at the end of dinner we were deciding who was going to drive home. After a tossing it around for a bit it was decided that my mom would drive one car and my sisters boyfriend the other. My moms husband has a hard time driving at night, but he does anyway. (There is no restriction on his license)
So about ten minutes into driving I watched mom start to slow down on a narrow road and put on her emergency light, I got worried, thinking there might have been something wrong with her car. But she didn't pull over.
Finally we came to a stop and I saw what had happened. A Ford F150 had rolled accross the road, the window was completely smashed, and smoke was puring from the front end. Accross the street was another truck, smoke also pouring out of it, and there in the middle of the road a gasoline container (most likely used from a generator due to the power outages) on fire, and dripping onto the road.
My mother could NOT stop the car because we had all the babies with us. And there were a lot of people there helping so we drove on. As we dronve past, I could hear someone inside the white truck screaming.
It is truly amazing, how quickly in just a few seconds, your entire life can change.
My mom later pulled off to switch with her husband because she was tired. We talked about what we had seen earlier. She said that all she saw was something that looked like a large piece of cardbaord rolling accross the street, that was no cardboard. It was a LARGE truck. Had her husband been driving, (he likes to speed) they, and the three children would have been killed. Instantly. (Her car is not much bigger than a Festiva)
Since we were trying to keep up, (In an the Festiva that we realyl were driving in) we would have been hurt very badly and also possibly killed.
I can't help but stop and think, those few extra minutes spent in the parking lot, the decision for my Mom to drive, each red light...
We missed that truck by SECONDS.
Isn't that scary? Just a split second is all it takes.
I am so greatful for my family.
