Date: 10/15/2004 9:15:00 PM From Authorid: 10915 Just don't buy from a company called Viacom. You will get conned out the frame. |
Date: 10/15/2004 9:18:00 PM From Authorid: 53961 You might check the Consumer Reports magazine at the library. Their site costs online. |
Date: 10/15/2004 9:21:00 PM From Authorid: 36766 Don't get a Dell, or a Compaq. We use Dells at work & they always mess up. I have a Compaq & it's junk. |
Date: 10/15/2004 9:35:00 PM From Authorid: 53961 You also might talk to a computer repair shop. They can tell you which to stay away from and which has least breakdowns. |
Date: 10/15/2004 10:15:00 PM From Authorid: 36901 I won't use anything but a gateway myself. |

Ok, I e-mailed my compter geek cousin and this was his reply. "The best deal is Dell. Their prices are hard to beat and their service is exceptional. You can buy direct from Dell and often packages will have free shipping: http://www.dell.com While I think their PC's and laptops are wonderful, but their printers are bad Lexmark's. Lexmark printers suck, the cartridges are expensive and hard to find. I recommend Canon printers especially those with the separate color cartridges. Canon printers and digital cameras are terrific, also great service. I have a Canon 4 in one multipurpose printer/copier/scanner/fax. It does everything well (unusual) and I buy the cartridges from CarrotInk for $6.95 black and $7.95 colors. They last forever and print beautifully. Very cheap to operate. The best all around bang for the buck. It is nearly impossible to tell an original from a copy. Lots of printers are cheaper, but watch the cartridge prices! I did an analysis of all brands and Canon won hands down in all categories (Xerox had made me mad at $45 per cartridge for their 4 in 1). My favorite online hardware site is http://www.newegg.com , low prices, great service, cheap (and often free) shipping, no hassle returns." I trust him, as it was his field and he repairs many still since retirement. I, myself, have a Gateway, only becasue I bought it used from my daughter. It has served me well, as long as I do frequent maintenance. Kind of like a car. |
Date: 10/15/2004 11:07:00 PM From Authorid: 26598 I am not an expert. I just have an opinion of what I would require in a computer. Ok. I dont like laptops for the fact that I am a klutz, who would break it of it costs 3 thousand. I would suggest going to the consumer reports website and search for the comparison tests of the brands. Pic the most durable, and the least vulerable to static electricity. |
Date: 10/16/2004 1:53:00 AM From Authorid: 49689 The best thing to do is to go to www.tigerdirect or www.newegg.com and either get a barebones system which is basically a motherboard, case, processor, and floppy drive..The memory and cd-rom drive you can get real cheap through them also..or you can buy one of their pre-built systems, which are fairly cheap as well, depending on what you want to use it for |
Date: 10/16/2004 10:00:00 AM From Authorid: 57404 I went to www.abs.com that is where I got my system for about 800.00 and nothing is intergrated, all top of the line stuff and I have not had any problems with my system at all. Well except after 2 years (I play a lot of PC games like Diablo etc) my video card croaked, they replaced it and never once gave me any problems. I recommend them to anyone. :-) God Bless |

Thanks for your replies, everyone. |
Date: 10/17/2004 6:53:00 PM From Authorid: 52489 I use E-Machines at home and at work, and they're great! No problems at all! HP was bad for a little while, but I heard they're okay now. I used to get Dell, but they outsourced to India, and now their tech-support and customer-service dept is terrible! |
