Do you think the Media is delivering on there promise?

“Let’s talk a little media bias here. The media, I think, wants Kerry to win. And I think they’re going to portray Kerry and Edwards – I’m talking about the establishment media, not Fox – but they’re going to portray Kerry and Edwards as being young and dynamic and optimistic and all. There’s going to be this glow about them that some, is going to be worth, collectively, the two of them, that’s going to be worth maybe 15 points.” – Newsweek Assistant Managing Editor Evan Thomas on the July 10 Inside Washington.

Shortly after Evan Thomas made that statement the front of NewsWeek had a cover photo of Kerry and Edwards with a glow---they stopped just short of putting halo's arround their heads...

When Bush was originally nominated in 2000, his picture that appeared on front of newsweek was in black and white and they stopped just short of drawing horns on his head.

The media of course has not had any real discussion of Kerry's senate record, they pronounce the swift boat vets as "discredited" when they've done no investigation of the groups claims. There has been no discussion of what Kerry did after Vietnam and meeting with the VietKong, there has been no discussion of why Kerry's medals had to be reissued, no demand for Kerry to sign form 180 to release ALL his military records as they've demanded of Bush.

On the Boston Globes website several days ago they had a Kerry talking points memo (released by the kerry campaign) posted under news-stories--I sent them an e-mail complimenting them on there cost-cutting measures--why go to the bother of having a reporter rewrite a talking points memo when you can just publish it as is...saves time and money I'm sure.

So do you think the media has done there job? Do you think they've done everything they can to deliver that 15 points. Admittedly CBS has taken the lead, though Dan Rather did slip up a bit..but, oh well. Give the "journalist" credit for trying.

Date: 10/15/2004 9:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 19613    As a person who is not exposed to the American media, I am intrigued by the notion that the general media would have something to gain by promoting a certain candidate. Can I ask why you believe the media would want Kerry to win? What do they ahve to gain? Or to loose by the re-election of George Bush?
Date: 10/15/2004 10:07:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Did you not read the quote? I'm just going by what they say..and it is laughable to think the US media isn't openly campaigning for Kerry. We know that the UK media is. The Guardian is even running a contest to send the person with the best pro-Kerry letter to Clark County, Ohio to campaign for Kerry..so tell me, why does the foreign media feel it necessary to them to have Kerry elected?
Date: 10/15/2004 10:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 19613    Well I can answer that question, from my experience with European media, the majority of people feel (rightly or wrongly) Bush's foreign policy to be arrogant and dangerous.I would not say that the media are trying to influence the public so much as public have influenced the media (maybe that just means i've been brainwashed who knows) But you must remember that Europe is a much more liberal and secular place by American standards, and the values and ideas espoused by Geroge Bush would generally not be in accordance with most Europeans. So to answer your question, in my opinion foreign media doesnt feel safe with Bush as the leader of the most powerful country in the world, interesting when you consider that a majority of Americans probably Bush as a better choice to fight terrorism than John Kerry. That is as best an asnwer i can give, but you never answered my original question. What does the American media have to gain by having John Kerry elected?
Date: 10/15/2004 10:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 19613    Im not saying you're wrong, you understand, in your opinion that the American media favour Kerry over Bush, I don't have enough experience with your media to form an educated opinion. I'm just wondering what their motives would be in choosing one over the other.
Date: 10/15/2004 12:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 47162    Ya know, you conservatives mock liberals because we believe in some vast right wing conspiracy, but you all believe in some vast, left wing media conspiracy. Guess we're all nuts.

Date: 10/16/2004 11:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 55967    DP, to answer your question, the general media has always traditionally been bent toward the liberal side. The quotes on this post is an excellent example of that, and it can be seen in the material. Now, exactly WHY that is, I'm not too sure, but it is an interesting research goal. I have been thinking of digging into that.
