I remember when I was little we were able to wear our costumes to school, draw ghosts and, horrors of horrors, eat candy! We were also given a bible in the 5th grade, which I think I lost on the way home from school. How did we ever grow up to be whole and healthy without the beloved PC police..gosh I'm glad we have people looking out for us...not! |

Is anyone else not allowed to send baked goods or candy into school? They've done away with all parties. We can send...carrot sticks though! Gosh, kids love carrot sticks. Kids really don't have a whole lot of fun to look forward to in school anymore...My daughters school doesn't celebrate christmas, they've replaced it with "celebrate literacy day" which is so much fun! They get to do stuff like read books, which is what they do every other day of the week. |

Kelly hit it on the head! looks like we are the same age. we had a visiting preacher once a month. we said the pledge. we prayed. i don't remember any problems about it. what we didn't have was kids shooting up the schools, disrespect to teachers and other school oficials (including bus drivers) and there weren't so many kids getting still acting like two year olds when they were 16. yea kelly, how did we survive all this? |

We now have a fall holiday and a winter holiday. It's time to all sing.... Every party has a pooper and that's why we invited you... Party Pooper... Party Pooper. If you're sufficiently motivated, organize a halloween party with other parents. Kids should still be allowed to have fun. |

This is just another example of how the schools in the US celebrate multiculturalism...Ban or rename the existing holidays. Heaven forbid your child should do something that you did as a child or even worse, have fun while at school. |

Kelly, we are also not allowed to send in baked goods for a party and instead everything must have a store ingredient label. I can understand this considering there are children with severe allergies to peanuts and other things. They ask that we don't send in candy for snack time, but as far as I know, cupcakes and cookies are still welcomed for the "parties". |

My youngest has yet to have a party and she is in the first grade. My oldest daughter always attended Department of Defense schools up to 8th grade. In Department of Defense schools they had parties, with candy, baked goods and other dangerous activities such as singing christmas carols. |

MomaBug, if you are trying to insinuate that the problem with the children today stems from the removal of prayer from school, that's really not the issue. When they did that, they never removed religion from the schools, but rather removed the teachings of the religions from them. It's not that different than being a Christian adult devout in their religion but doesn't preach from the pulpit while at work. What I actually think that Kelly was talking about, is even though we all weren't in agreement with each other's customs we just allowed each other the grounds to celebrate the holidays and removed the students that couldn't participate. I remember being handed a bible by someone standing on the corner of my junior high. I also remember dressing up for Halloween and coloring ghosts, goblins and pumpkins. Decorating the windows with scary things, creepy mansions, frankenstein, the wolfman. I also remember coloring in Santa, hanging Christmas wreaths and singing Christmas songs that we had starting practicing in September for choir. We had birthday parties and you could bring in a cupcake for each kid in the classroom just because it was your birthday. This isn't about the whole religious brawl, it's about trying to put EVERYONE on a level ground. The way I see it, nothing was wrong with making the one kid in the classroom that didn't believe in celebrating birthdays, leave the room and go to the computer room, or the art room to mess around for a half hour while everyone enjoyed the cupcake and the punch the birthday kid brought in. Because it makes the one kid feel bad? Okay...considering their inability to participate is focused around their faith, then going without or against their faith shouldn't be something they regret not doing. However that seems like a huge thing to expect a child to differentiate right? We wonder what's happened to our kids....how about making them understand complex adult situations when they aren't even close to comprehension of them as a start to fixing that problem. Us adults have a way of dragging our kids into everything they shouldn't have to worry about. |

My son had them in Pre-K, however mind you the school had been in the basement of the covenant church up the road from house for 20 years or so before they made them move. The teacher wasn't teaching what the church members wanted. Instead of books on Noah's Ark, she had things like Clifford and Arthur's first day of school. She also let them celebrate Halloween and they couldn't stand the decorations or the fact that the kids were allowed to dress up. She moved to another church that doesn't have a problem with the whole it's evil witchcraft sorcery mumbo jumbo and can see it for it's worth to a bunch of kids. My daughter went to school with her costume and they had a Halloween party last year...okay so did we have a leap year or was Halloween on a Saturday last year? LOL |

it's all about being pc and making kids grow up too fast. i hate it. besides, isn't halloween a somewhat religious holiday (i know that's not about candyt and costumes, it's about the holiday) for some kids? how are they gonna feel when their holiday disappears? |

We had a leap year, Halloween was on a Friday last year. I can understand not dressing up and stuff to a degree, but at least have a party. My daughter had been bringing home Halloween art projects for at least a week. That really stinks that your kids aren't getting to at least color a Halloween picture or something! |

i should clarify that. there are districts where halloween has disappeared and christmas has not. even if the religious aspects are not covered in school, the activities are, and for children, it all flows together, there isn't always alot of distinction. it's a holiday, it's fun. i might also add that in our program we'd start out with fall, apples, the story of johnny appleseed, leading up to halloween, ichabod crane, etc., plus all the just fun party stuyff. the kids loved it. got really excited about it. it's bnever a bad thing for kids to get excited about learning stuff. |

Yeah, we're not really allowed to call it Halloween. We have little parties in dental, but it's now a "fall party" instead of Halloween because one of the students is a Jehovah's Witness. She doesn't mind, but her parents do. So we do all the same stuff, we just can't call it "Halloween". |

Any day one gives to the Lord is the Lords day, even if that day is halloween. Christians or some of them just dont understand that YES while we are against all that this holiday stands for, we can still enjoy it by giving the day to the Lord. And KIDS dont know, dont care, it could be called JOEY day, all they want is the party, the costume, the fun and I think they should be able to have it. Even here in utah if halloween falls on a sunday or saturday, that friday before they will have a party for the kids. I remember living in blythe california and one year halloween fell on a sunday. NOW part of the town was very religouse the other part wasnt so they had trick or treak on both saturday and sunday. NOW that was a candy killing time. LOL, Those that are just totatlly against it do not have to let their kid participate. Actually its been said here at usm that school is for learning not teaching religion so that statement should hold true as far as parties go , school is for learning, but the point is THEY have always had the parties and should continue parties for the kids, anyone that dont want to have their kid, need not send them.I just to NOT after becoming a christian participate in halloween nor would I let my children, until I came across these two scriptures. Col:16: Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:"" In some bibles holyday says holiday. Rom:14:5: One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. Rom:14:6: He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.."" Some christians wish to hold their lives , their children into bondage, God would have us to be free and enjoy, yet KNOW how things can effect us spiritually and that is up to the parent to teach their children how to handle this and what to do about it. |

i didn't say that the kids have a problem. and i didn't say anything about removing prayer being an issue. what i meant was that when we were in school all this stuff was allowed. parties, cupcakes, ghosts and gobblins. it seems to me that the adults are the problem. not all adults. just the PC ones. i was just saying that it seems like the more changes that are made the worse some things get. believe me, i am the last one on earth to talk religion with anybody. i don't force it and i don't want it forced on me. i'm just saying that 20+ years ago (was it really that long??!) a lot of the stuff that we got to do is no longer allowed. and it just seems to me there are more problems in schools now than before all these changes. not to offend anybody but it does seem like we had it better then. |
