Marital Dilemma......To be or not to be.......~SpaceCase

DishTV, to be or not to be? That is the question.

Mike came home yesterday evening, all fired up about the big 'deal' we would get if we ordered DishTV like his buddy Al did. We are not new to digital cable, two years ago we had DirecTV while living in Beaumont.

Mike just wanted to try out the smallest package, 40 channels for ONLY $20 a month...after, of course, buying the dish and receiver for $100.

Why is it guys always get hooked by appearances, and not substance???

So, I took the card he handed me with all the channels printed on it for thre packages, the Basic, Family, and Premium Packages. Then I took a moment to examine the actual channels offered in the basic channel.

Out of the 40 channels, there were less than twenty that were of interest to us as a family...and about half of those were news/weather/sports related...minimally utilized programs.

At least 7 home shopping networks...boy we really are a consumer-friendly society.

Then there were the repeat channels, such as Disney East Coast, Disney West Coast, Nickelodeon East Coast, Nickelodeon West Coast, channels that show the exact same programing, except two hours later or earlier depending...COME ON!!!!

I'm perfectly fine with our premium package right now...and that's ABC, NBC, CBS, WB, FOX, and PBS...and GUESS WHAT?!

DishTV does not offer these on the basic OR premium packages. What the heck?!!

I love my broadcast TV and find it ridiculous to pay $20 a month for 40 channels just so our TV can be stuck on ESPN every minute Mike's in the building...

...or EPSN News, ESPN Classic, ESPN II...

So I give it to the people. What say you? ;)

Date: 10/13/2004 12:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 7952    I have always hated cable and will never get it. Didn't have it in Australia (television stations were so much better down there than they are here) and even though I roll my eyes at the number of infomercials that are on broadcast TV, I would rather do something more useful with my time than spend it flicking over channels, which, like you said are just repeats after repeats after repeats..

Date: 10/13/2004 12:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53836    Hey DW!!! Thanks for the support, LOL!! If the number of drug-pusher commerical and political ads are this bad on regular tv, I can't imagine how awful it would be have 40 more ways of selling you bologna, LOL!! I bet in Australia you didn't have all the smear campaigns and magical pill commercials interrupting the peace, did ya? Boy I feel like Sour Sally today with all my gripes, I bet that means Aunt Flo is on her way here :O What kinda shows are popular in Australia and what shows do you enjoy here in the states?

But I swear, sometimes i'll be too tired to change channel and i'll get so sucked in with the infomercials that i want to grab my credit card and order some crap! LOL. Luckily i have good control and if i am too lazy to change the channel then i am definately too lazy to get my credit card and phone!
Date: 10/13/2004 12:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 7952    Oh and Aussie TV has the same TV shows that are in the US (Not much of an Aussie drama market out there.. i mean there is some but we are more interested in the US than our own! LOL) But we have our own news programs of course and various other shows here and there
Date: 10/13/2004 12:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 62893    I personally would not get it either. My hubby would have a field day with ESPN also.Misty

LOL May God Bless your happy home Everything's rollin' right along here The boys are as wild and wooly as always and Mike's working...I'm keeping up the house and family...same ol' same ol'...I love it
Date: 10/13/2004 7:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 26452    I agree, it is a rip off. We do have that, but we have to pay alot more to get local channels and ones we actually watch. We would get cable but we can't get it where we live.
Date: 11/10/2004 4:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 48531    well im alot late, but sports blows. There isnt really anything thats interesting about sports. I have rabbit ears and am prefectly happy with it. We get WB, FOX, NBC,ABC and CBS plus PBS and a few others that im not sure about. For a one time purchase of $30 bucks for the amplified ears, we get alot of channels, and we have avcr and dvd player and a few local places to rent if we are really that desperate. But 20 bucks for c-r-a-p is sad. ESPN is good for scores and highlights at 7 to 8 am, if it interests you, but otherwise, it itself is a repeat of nonsense.
