Belly Piercing Question ~*Got Bubbles?*~

Hey everyone...I've been DIEING to get my belly button pierced n my mom refuses at all costs, says I gotta wait till Im 18. She said she doesnt want me to get it done cause they all get infected n I'll have to take it out. I dont think that, but u know how moms are. Any ways, now shes got another excuse for me not to get it. My brother told her that it causes problems with the baby to have it pierced. I dont see why a belly piercing would cause a birth defect, but now she definetly wont let me get it pierced. Is this true?

Date: 10/10/2004 8:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 7952    I have mine pierced, and while i'm not pregnant I know FOR SURE that it will cause no problems. Thats absolutely ridiculous. Oh, and mine also got infected but not too badly. Go to a doctors office to get it done.. its much cleaner there and less problems
Date: 10/10/2004 8:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 42461    Hmmm..I have never heard of that one. I think belly button rings are cute, but I have never gotton one myself just for the fact that if I had a tight shirt on, and it didnt show my belly, the ring would stick out. That would drive me crazy. But alsoI if I was pregnant I would definatly take it out cause it would be very unattractive in my opinion. You know having a beer gut and all lol.
Date: 10/10/2004 8:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 58078    I know people who have had them infected. As for the birth defects..I'm not sure about but I know when you get prego you have to take it out or should or something like that...thats what I heard. Don't know if its true.
Date: 10/10/2004 8:19:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49091    I know 6 ppl with em done n 1 got it infected, then again she didnt clean it all that much :-/ And yeah, I can see taking it out while your preg, cause I'd find it uncomfy, but I didnt think it would cause any problems. Thanx guys!!

Date: 10/10/2004 8:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 62267    It doesn't cause problems with a baby until your belly starts gettin' big when you're pregnant then it may not even then. And if you have it profesionally done, hardly ever will it get infected. I got mine done when I was 16. I DID lose alot of blood because a piece of fat got strung around my ring and when I moved it would squirt blood. I soaked through a wad of napkins and paper towels on to my shirt...it was bad but my mom pulled it off with tweezers (painful) and it never got infected. Good luck!
Date: 10/10/2004 8:28:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49091    Thanxies Freaq :-) Im so set on it, but mom is dead set on no.
Date: 10/10/2004 8:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 62267    I wouldn't do it without telling her though. May cause even bigger probs. Do like I did...beg...cry...whine...eventually if they're like my folks they'll give in ;-)
Date: 10/10/2004 8:40:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49091    LOL I was STRONGLY debating weither I should get it done without them knowing, but then I was like, oh no, she'd kick my butt :-p I've been begging her for such a long time n shes like no, no, sarah I said no :-p
Date: 10/10/2004 8:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 62267    My dad was my prob. He figured I would wear belly shirts and flaunt it but I haven't shown anyone but family and my bf. And a couple close friends. I just like it. It's like...a part of me now! Hehe.
Date: 10/10/2004 9:02:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49091    My dad said maybe when I turn 16 cause I got my 2nd cart piercing n he didnt like it, but mom n I just went n got it done.
Date: 10/10/2004 10:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 12072    Maybe you could compromise with your parents, and ask them if you could do it for your 16th birthday. You're still quite young, give it time...when I was about 15-16, I swore I was going to get a tatoo the second I turned 18. well, I'm 19 going on 20 and have yet to get one! lol, granted that's a bit more permenant...I did, however, get my belly button pierced a month after my 18th birthday. I accidently let it close up almost a year later, and then I got it redone in mid-September. So good luck! :-)
Date: 10/11/2004 1:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 62552    Any piercing is going to get infected if it's not cleaned enough or if it's overcleaned... you should say the same thing if your mum has her ears pierced. But I don't think it would have any damage on pregnancy... if you get it done though, make sure it's done by a professional... doctors aren't qualified to do piercings or tattoos... think of it this way... would you go to a body piercer if you needed medication for a headache? Sure, the doctors sterilise everything... but body piercers do it the same way. Sorry to waffle on... I just feel awkward about that stuff. Anyway, good luck!
Date: 10/11/2004 2:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 62915    I had mine done when I was 13 and it only became infected at the beginning but I think it was part of the healing process. No problems since and I am now 18. As for the pregnency bit it is ridiculous. The only problem you may have is the hole will stretch and you may need to buy a pregnecy belly button ring. My sister in law has had 2 children and hasn't touch her ring since the day she got it and her children are fine. ANother myth I heard is that it will poion the baby's food supply!!! The uter rot that is out there!! Ghost-Chick
Date: 10/11/2004 9:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 49172    First of all, if your mom says wait until your 18, then wait. My parents are the same way (although I did go behind their backs and get my nips pierced). And it doesn't cause any problems with the actual fetus. The only problem with navel piercings and pregnancies are when the stomach starts to get larger, the ring might tear the skin, but you can take fishing line and replace the barbell with it and once you've had a child return the barbell.
Date: 10/11/2004 10:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 62570    My mom is the exact opposite. She actually persuaded me to get mine pierced when I was 10. I got it pierced and it hasn't been trouble at all. That birth defect myth is just plain silly. If your going to get pregnant, yeah you have to take the belly button ring out, but you can get it pierced again after the birth but if there is a birth defect, it wasn't caused by the belly button ring, thats for sure.
Date: 10/11/2004 10:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 62570    Plus, if you dont take care of your belly button ring, it WILL get infected, just like all piercings.
Date: 10/11/2004 10:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 35720    Parents are generally misinformed about piercings. Navel piercings are relatively painless and not as likely to get infected as say, a tongue or lip piercing. If they do get infected, you don't have to take them out.. just use ointment. I've have mine for 7 years, and it became infected ONCE back a few months after I got it.. it went away with ointment after like 2 days.. it gets even more irritated if you take it out. Plus, it's a harmless piercing.. it's becoming as socially accepted as ears nowadays.
Date: 10/11/2004 10:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 35720    Alexa, haha that sounds like my mom.. I was 11 and she's all "Awwww get your belly button pierced!" I was like "OK!" lol.. all my friends were amazed.
