October 7, 2004 (LIVERMORE, Calif.) — Spelling counts -- especially at a library.

A mural unveiled yesterday at a new library in Livermore, California, has eleven spelling mistakes. The 40-thousand-dollar ceramic mural depicts figures from science and the arts.

But it didn't take a rocket scientist to see the goofs in the names of Einstein, Shakespeare, Vincent Van Gogh, and Michelangelo, among others.

Miami artist Maria Alquilar has no apologizes. She says officials had plenty of opportunity to catch her spelling mistakes.

The city will now pay her another six-grand to fix the mural.

Date: 10/8/2004 11:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 5353    Well, it's not really her responsibility to make sure everything is spelled correctly. I'm sure she presented them with plenty of concept sketches and they must have watched her do the work, so yeah, they should pay her to correct the work.

Date: 10/8/2004 12:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 12072    She probably did it on purpose to get more money...and that is really lame. ~Becky

Date: 10/8/2004 3:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 62915    Man! You'd expect better in a library. She was right they would of had several opportunities to catch her mistakes! Ghost-Chick

Date: 10/8/2004 3:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 12876    well, if it was up to them to approve the final mural, and they accepted it, then they should pay to have it redone, good story
Date: 10/9/2004 12:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 37900    Because Ms. Alquilar received money for her work, she is a professional. As such, she should correct the mistakes at her expense. We would expect no less from any other professional that should know what they are doing: a house-builder should know how to install a window; a mechanic should know how to change oil; a doctor, when considering an amputation, should know the difference between the left leg and the right leg. If Ms. Alquilar still refuses to correct her mistakes, the library should leave the mural as it is, with a sign telling all interested viewers the name of the artist that was too lazy to check her spelling. She'll get to keep her $40,000, but I can't anyone else hiring her, unless the contract specifies "no words." She'll win the battle and lose the war.
Date: 12/28/2004 9:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 26303    Well both parties are at fault. She should check her work. But it is easy to miss when you know what it is supposed to read. Pity it wasn't picked up before finishing. But I guess she should accept responsibility and fix the errors.
