Zoo builds treadmill for elephant....Flame-On

October 8, 2004 (ANCHORAGE, Alaska) — Maggie needs to lose some weight, so she's getting her very own treadmill.

But it has to be a heavy-duty model -- because Maggie weighs more than 9,000 pounds. She's a 22-year-old African elephant at the Anchorage, Alaska, zoo.

Zoo director Tex Edwards says Maggie is just like a person, she's as lazy as can be and loves to eat. Edwards says theirs will be the first-ever elephant treadmill.

They're talking with mining engineers who are used to designing conveyor belts for heavy loads. Edwards says designing and building the treadmill could cost as much as $250,000.

Zoo keepers are also putting Maggie on a diet. Edwards says she'll have to work for her food.
