THE DRAFT,,, BY FIRSTBORN

I'm glad that usm supports free speech and that I can make a post on just darn near any subject. I was reading and had commented on a post and thought I'd bring up some points that were made and my opinion on those points. As of course I believe in Liberty to voice our opinion, yes that is liberty for ALL of us. And because of the draft of old, we HAVE that liberty, all though some would like to silence us.

The subject The DRAFT.

Someone had mentioned that there would be no need for a draft if not for this war in Iraq, or words to that effect.

My opinion is that while I would not like my sons, daughters, grandkids being forced into a draft, I think one should have been started once again more then ten years ago. I don't care who the president is or was, bush, nixon, carter, clinton, makes no difference to me, the thing that makes a difference to me is that we NEED a military to defend us. Because our military was great we have become the power that we have. We are able to fight wars on different shores , keeping them from the Untied States.

I hope that TWOSPIRTS doesnt mind me quoting her here as she has some very smart words to say about the subject. She said::"

"Everytime the idea of the draft being reinstated comes up, there are those who say, "No!!", "Not my son (daughter, husband, brother)". To those who think that way, I have one question. What makes you think that your child, spouse, or sibling is any better than anyone in the past who was drafted and served their country? What makes them any better than my father who was drafted in 1961, my uncle who was drafted in 1960, or my neighbor who was drafted in 1971? Plain and simple, they are not any better, and should the draft be reinstated, any who shirk their duty should not only be imprisoned, but also stripped of every right and freedom that they enjoy as an American, because it was the blood of those who served before that guaranteed them those rights and freedoms""

I agree with that statement with my heart. There are many things in life we do not wish to do, but do them anyway, for the people as a WHOLE in this united states. My uncle was drafter many many years ago, He cried, threw a fit , didnt want to go. Not only did he go, he served three terms at vietnam and stayed in the service for twenty years.

There are many countries out there that are growing strong, that hate us, that wish us harm and if we do as Kerry would like, Kerry Introduces a Plan To Cut Numerous Defense Programs: Cut the number of Navy submarines and their crews Reduce the number of light infantry units in the Army down to one Reduce tactical fighter wings in the Air Force Terminate the Navy’s coastal mine-hunting ship program Force the retirement of no less than 60,000 members of the Armed Forces in one year.

This is what he wants, yet on the other hand, he says he is going to increase the military because now that bush got us there, we have to finish it and of course he has a better, *cough* plan for that too. But so much for Kerry that says he is going to do one thing and then when congress votes on it, he votes against the very things he needs in order to do the things he says he is going to do.

So if the draft does happen, and while it may not happen now, I do think soon somewhere down the line it IS going to happen, It NEEDS to happen, we may not like it but we do LIKE freedom, or we can just not have a military and let the nazi take over. Your opinions please.

Date: 10/6/2004 12:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 50678    I know Bush wants the draft back!! Although that could be a ruimer(sp). If it comes back and Unknown Spirits(Jason) gets drafted, we have joked about going to Canada!! I won't let them take him, and he does want to go!! So I am praying it doesn't come back!!
Date: 10/6/2004 12:44:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16671    I had not heard about bush wanting it back, if he does I applaude him. I know your feelings well, I have two sons that would be of age and would not want them to go, but they are no better then anyone else, and I would pray big time for their well fare.
Date: 10/6/2004 12:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 35178    I agree.
Date: 10/6/2004 12:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 35178    ( I think the rumor about the draft started from a commercial i heard about being on MTV, it showed a party and someone came in and said they had been drafted, the party stopped and then the ad encouraged you to go out and vote.) What the media won't do. I think its pretty clear what they are saying. And who they are trying to say it about. But they are just trying to instill an idea that hasn't even been brought up as an issue.
Date: 10/6/2004 12:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    the first thing that comes to mind is "the land of the free" but if you instill the draft do people still have "freedom" when they are forced to do something some really dont want to do?
Date: 10/6/2004 1:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    A bill a democrat put forth on the draft was voted down yesterday 400 (and something) to two...Unknown Spirits and everyone else can quit worrying for now. Just about everyone I know is either in the military or connected to the military and no one...not-one-single-person I've talked to wants to serve along someone who has been drafted...that isn't to say that there aren't some military people who want the draft...just none I know. We have *one* of the best militaries in the world and that is due to it being voluntary. I do agree with Two-Spirit on the thoughts posted, why should some serve and others not? What I don't agree with is this issue being used as a scare tactic by another party to suck up votes.
Date: 10/6/2004 1:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16671    Thanks shortAngel., Hi Midnightly, there are some things that we have to put first, there are things now that are forced upon us that we dont like, some of them good some of them bad depending on ones opinion. I mean our gas taxes are raised too high, yet there is nothing we can do about that. We forced to wear seatbelts even tho its been proven that some deaths were because of people wearing their belt, were forced to carry car insurance. Now some of these things are good, some are bad. Our kids by law have to attend school. BUT while we dont have all the freedoms we would like, such as lots of places do not support free enterprise and there are so many permits ya have to get just to build a addition on your own home, but if you think about we have more freedoms then most places in this world. We are free to eat what we want, we are free to travel when we want and not have to stop at each stateline and get permission from someone to carry on, we are free to strike, we are free to go to church or not go to church, we are free to speak as we want to, we are free to do so many things, things we take for granted, but without a military how long are THESE freedoms going to last?
Date: 10/6/2004 1:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 36704    I agree with Kelly, and lmfao your comments were deleted.
Date: 10/6/2004 1:32:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16671    Kelly, I dont agree with any kind of scare tactics used in any situation, but the thing is the people that say they wouldnt want to serve with those that have been drafted and I can see the point on this, thinking they will not give their all, but that is wrong, many men were drafted in the past and some went on to be heros, were men of honor. Many drafted fought and lived, fought and died and people that would think less of a drafted person should not do so. Plus the military does weed out the bad ones, or at least tries to do so in the first six weeks. Thanks for stopping by.
Date: 10/6/2004 1:41:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16671    Thanks base. To all, I may not get back here often as the phone is used for bussiness at certain times of the day. But I will get back here as often as I can.
Date: 10/6/2004 1:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    Yes Democratic congressman Rangel even voted against his own bill yesterday. More proof nthat it was a ploy and a scare tactic. So for all who can't bear the thought of their precious little num num going off to war can rest easy. And also rest easy in the knowledge that other people with a sense of duty, service and pride are out there not only in Iraq but around the world looking out for you.
Date: 10/6/2004 2:16:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16671    A big Amen Bcar, its a tough job but someone has to do it.
Date: 10/6/2004 4:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 17081    Well said, Kelly
Date: 10/6/2004 4:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 19613    Ah the bliss of living in a tiny neutral country Our cops don't even carry guns
Date: 10/6/2004 5:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 62787    i disagree on the draft...looks like 400 said so too. its not because they are "better"..its more of the thought of a loved one going to a battle and most likely getting killed. never seeing them again except in a casket. thats why many dont want their children to be drafted. - Blade of the Samurai
Date: 10/6/2004 6:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 47296    When I listed those in my family who were drafted, there was one that I left out, though not intentionaly. That is an uncle that I never met, MSG OLEN BERRY WILLIAMS, K CO 31 INF RGT 7 INF DIV, who was drafted in WWII, and stayed in the service after that war to see service in Korea. His status since December 12th, 1950 is Died While Missing (MIA). He died at the Chosin Reservoir. According to the report filed by his platioon leiutenant, who was one of only a handful of K Co. to survive, although wounded, he could have made it out with the rest of the survivors. He chose instead to remain behind with those too wounded to escape the Chinese and Korean onslaught. No one ever wants to see a loved one die in battle. MSG Williams had brothers and sisters that wanted him to return home and start his own family. Now we waiy for the return of his remains so that we can give them the proper burial that is so deserved.
Date: 10/6/2004 6:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 37101    The draft, unless there is a catastrophic event (war with China), will never be reinstated. -
Date: 10/6/2004 7:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 47296    SC, when I joined in 1979, I said I would never see armed conflict unless Russia decided to go for it. Little did I know that within the next 4 years I would see Lebanon, Grenada, and Central America. I learned quick to never say never.
Date: 10/6/2004 7:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 61977    I agree with you completely Firstborn as far as the DRAFT is concerned, now about Bush and Kerry I honestly do not care for either one of them. Good Post though nontheless.
Date: 10/6/2004 10:54:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16671    Dark Phoenix, they should.
Blade, not all come home in a casket.
Two spirits, I'm honored to have you on my post.
Sorry smooth criminal, it will be re instated.
Yep two spirits never say NEVER as when one does, life shows them different.
Mother love, LOL thanks for agreeing with me, however until a WOMAN makes president I dont think I'll be happy either.

Date: 10/7/2004 2:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 19613    They don't need to though FB. In fairness there's only 4 million people in Ireland, and guns (specifically shotguns and rifles)are only available for hunting. Our army is tiny and is only involved in UN peacekeeping missions so we'll obviously never have to worry about a draft.
Date: 10/7/2004 4:01:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16671    I think we do, and I think it will happen .
