City lights and airplanes, The summer’s done and gone. A window seat observer And an essay left undone.
Take me home, I whisper To the cars down below. I want to breathe that Georgian air And feel that fall breeze blow
Humid as the temp’ture cools, And night makes way for us fools.
High school games and sister-talks, We’d run barefoot in the grass. Dirt roads, streets and sidewalks, And country cricket brass.
Here the tires sing so deep; They’re rumbling instruments. Train bells ring, curtains sweep- The skyscraper’s accompaniments.
City, play your grand fanfare. Tear me up, leave me bare
Window watcher between two worlds, Torn by home’s abstraction, Gently fall between the furls Of here and there’s cruel faction.
