Gapping holes in the night-sky. Dead stars and livid memories-

The remnants of pecan orchirds smoldering on the riverside-

The flood of '53..Baby in a rocking chair. New life on the bayou-

Owls in the oak grove??? They don't live here any more.

New mansions built on old foundations..Slaves and sugar cane-

White horses running wild in the blackberry thickets-

Run me over?? No!! They can see in the dark. Ghosts....

Trash heaps and charred wood...Mexican-brick chimneys..

Thoughts, born of sorrow. Twenty-first century soundtrack..Old...

Harpoon..Wielded by my sharp-eyed grandfather. Armour-plated fishes-

Extinct woodpeckers and the trees that they lived in.

Ghost train across the river swamp..Steam clouds and dirty chickens-

Salt and sugar..Coffee and copper wire..Wanna trade for a cypress-bass?

Meat, so scarce..Had to eat opossum..Boiling poke salad..Sassafras...

End of days..Passed around amongst the children..Whiskey and weariness-

Never met you, Albert..But...I'll never forget.....

My brother is seventy-one and he loves to tell me the old stories of relatives that I never (or barely) knew. Grandfather Albert passed-away before I was born. I have had that old steel harpoon-head for many years. Never gave much thought to where it came from or who owned it. The other children had things of his. Shotgun...a knife, a faded signature...Now I have something also...:) Stick em, grandpaw!!

They used to spear these huge (hundred pounds and up) fish called "gar" when the waters flooded the basin. Stay sweet
