NEW DELHI (Reuters) - A village council has ordered an Indian woman pregnant with her second husband's child to return to her first husband, released from a Pakistani jail five years after being written off as a deserter or dead. Sapper Mohammed Arif disappeared during fierce fighting in the Kargil heights in Kashmir (news - web sites) in 1999 and was declared a deserter, but had in fact been captured by Pakistani troops.

After being tracked in a prison in Pakistan and returning to his village near Delhi this month, Arif appealed to Islamic scholars to reclaim his wife, Guriya, local papers reported.

The village council ruled in his favor, but Arif does not want to accept Guriya's unborn baby. The council has yet to make a decision on the child's fate, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported Monday.

It is not uncommon for Indian and Pakistani prisoners to languish in each other's jails without full details being known by either side. Arif's fate was discovered in December, 2003, and he was returned to India last month as part of a prisoner swap.

************************************************* Can you imagine having to go back. And the jerk doesn't want her baby so she will be seperated from her infant and made to live with someone she doesn't love anymore.*********************************

Date: 9/21/2004 1:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 11341    Another reason I am glad to be an American! I hope she can get away from that man without it meaning death for her and/or her baby

Date: 9/21/2004 2:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 36352    That is just wrong. If he can't accept the child he does'nt deserve anything. Besides no one has the right to make some one do any thing. But I guess thats what comes of not being an American ;o)
Date: 9/22/2004 6:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 13636    as for your comment.... theres no telling if they ever DID love each other... or if she was even in a loving relationship with her second husband. in that country, she was probably seen as lucky to GET a second husband after already having a first one.
Date: 9/24/2004 3:33:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13119    maybe BG but the fact remains he wants her back and not her baby. Who is going to look after the child, what mother do you know that doesn't instantly bond with their baby when they are born. I know there are some but could you imagine the horror of having to give up your child to live with someone that you haven't seen in over 5 yrs.
