NEW DELHI (Reuters) - A village council has ordered an Indian woman pregnant with her second husband's child to return to her first husband, released from a Pakistani jail five years after being written off as a deserter or dead. Sapper Mohammed Arif disappeared during fierce fighting in the Kargil heights in Kashmir (news - web sites) in 1999 and was declared a deserter, but had in fact been captured by Pakistani troops.
After being tracked in a prison in Pakistan and returning to his village near Delhi this month, Arif appealed to Islamic scholars to reclaim his wife, Guriya, local papers reported.
The village council ruled in his favor, but Arif does not want to accept Guriya's unborn baby. The council has yet to make a decision on the child's fate, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported Monday.
It is not uncommon for Indian and Pakistani prisoners to languish in each other's jails without full details being known by either side. Arif's fate was discovered in December, 2003, and he was returned to India last month as part of a prisoner swap.
