I do see alot of that. I will keep out apostrophies usually when I am typing messages to someone on Yahoo or something. As for in posts, I try to use them and spell out my words completely. Sometimes I will use abbrevations. My biggest one is prolly, I use that one alot. But I wouldn't say I am too bad with words in your post. I find it harder to do that actually. I am used to just typing the words, I would have to think more to be like 2gether. It screws me up and I have to pause instead of just continuously typing together. But thats just me |

Not only is it hard to understand, it is lazy. I was taught to use correct spelling and grammar at all times, and even today I still use it as much as I know how. Sure, I have the occasional "LOL" or "BRB." And I might forget an apostraphe every now and then. But I just don't see the "fad" in spelling like a kindergartener. It is a problem. I used to work in a pharmacy. I looked through a few applications from some 16-17 year olds and it was terrible. One application stuck with me, it was so bad. Under which positions they would like to work, the person put, "I want 2 wurk the cash register n answer fones b/c I like ppl." Needless to say, my manager didn't even give the applicant a chance. I understand if you are a bad speller. But laziness is another thing. |

everyone to their own... although i do understand your point about it affecting people in their work places and schools etc... i guess it needs to be tought in schools or something that this is how you write out letters etc, this is how you write your essays, and this is a way of writing on the internet, so that people are aware of where it is and isnt appropriate to use poor spelling and gramma! ps sorry for no capitalisation and probably bad spelling etc but it saves me thinking... i do too much thinking keep happy |

Evil Eddy - The thing is - it should be easier for you to type the right way than the wrong way. I would have to think harder to type without proper grammar, than with it because it comes naturally from years of school, etc... Do you know what I mean? I would have to concentrate hard to type incorrectly...lol...HipChik |

For some reason, I do not mind the BTW's, FYI's or LOL's. I think because it is a meaningful anacronym for something, not like a mistype, missing punctuation, or missing letters. |

I agree, it is very annoying to read...But i think that parents banning their children from using MSN etc is taking it a bit too far....I've had MSN since i was about 10, and I don't write in crazy internet slang! I guess you just need to know where to draw the line, writing in internet slang on your job application is a bit dumb O.O |

actually I type in internet slang all the time when im on the internet it just helps it go faster when im trying to explain a long subject to one of my friends online. But I have enough common sense to not use internet slang in school, at work, or anywhere off the internet. So I think if you like to use internet slang then go for it, but know where to draw the line so that it doesnt interfere with normal day activities. |

I dont use them because honestly I always hated english in school. And honestly If I wanted to I could put together some nice writing but while im on the internet. yeah. im gonna be lazy. Ill try and put periods and things like that in to make it sound better but I really dont have the time for spell check. I go on USM at work and im typing alot faster because my boss walks in and out. I think you should type the way ya want to just dont forget the other way. And you never know but alot of people arent wizzeeeeez lol at english you might be hurting someones feelings. Type the way ya want just go over it and make sure other people can read it ok. Thats how I feel. and Yes of course dont use it when it comes to buisness or school but the internet is finnnnneee |

I think it is annoying. Being a legal secretary, I work with legal documents all day and have to spell/punctuate correctly or I'm in deep poop. So, it just carries over when I'm online. I always write out full sentences and use punctuation correctly online...I think it is just plain easier to read. |

people ARE capable of switching according to the setting, and regardless of our spelling and grammatical tendencies, we ALL do it and it's something that everyone has to get proficient at in order to succeed. Nonetheless, I find the abbreviations with numbers and the purposeful mispellings very annoying and sometimes difficult to read. Whenever you write (or communicate in any manner) you have to keep your audience in mind-- I wish people would realize that this type of thing might be okay when they're talking among their friends, but it's REALLY annoying to the rest of us and that they should switch to normal spelling and grammar when they're addressing a larger audience out of consideration. |

We were actually talking about this in English class the other day. I always thought that writing in "Internetish" would eventually wind its way onto school papers, but my teacher said that he hasn't ever seen it. Some are trying to come up with solutions to this alleged problem; one included making schools put a bigger emphasis on writing. But no one will ever be able to control what people say on the Internet. We'll probably just have to live with it for awhile I suppose. |

I don't normally type and/or write like that unless I really have to hurry talking to a friend and need to type "u" or "r." I like typing normally!! I mean...I do say "lol!" a lot and use exclamation points...but it really bothers me when people have to use "@" for anything other than an email address pressty much. For example: "im @ bobs. aight?" Etc. Use correct English, people! It would do you some good to THINK. :-P Plus it makes things SO much easier for others to read. |

I agree with those who do not approve of the way some people put together a post or answer one. Some write like it is a foreign language. This kind of speaking is usually ignored by me and anyone who begins a post with O.K is usually passed over too. If it is not in plain English... I don't answer it. |

Dang I didnt realize that I would be judged over and an apostrophe, very rarely do I use one hehe. I suppose it is a matter of being lazy, but if you cant see passed the occasional missed apostrophe then you might be missing something good. I do have to say that the cooler someone thinks it is to type a certain way, the worse it is. To take internet type into school or work is a problem that needs to be corrected asap. To answer your question, I dont think the internet is making people stupid, but I do think its making people lazy. |

I can read it well but I agree people are getting lazy. I'm mean if I leave in 30 seconds I'm not gonna sit there typing got to go..I will type g2g..but internet language is sneaking into everything..school notes, reports, and if you can think it's snuck into talking...I was reading a note at lunch that said yo waz and then the up arrow...she took her time to color it in. Isn't it quicker to write up instead of the arrow colored in? I think we should use real English..It will help us all...also I don't see it used a lot at usm so that's good....Thanks for reading this long comment |

YEAH! Right here. I agree wholeheartedly! You couldn't have said it better, Hip Chick. I grew up in a school system where I had to learn to write correctly, and was taught to do that in all areas. On top of that, I graduated from College with a Mass Communications major, and an English major, and I love to write. I am still always studying writing, and what you named irks me, too. About those experts on two sides. I would say that actually, BOTH are right, but being that, the first experts mentioned need to be given top consideration. What I mean is that some kids will be sharp enough to understand that this quick type of writing has a place with friends perhaps, but not in the job market or other places in the world, but also, others will not make that distinction as shown by your example from the article. Hence, since many will not understand the distinctions, I agree that it can become a problem. |

I am guilty of leaving out the ' when saying I'm or isn't..LOL..I just type along and dont even think of it. I started playing yahoo bingo a bit ago, and when someone wins they say "wtg" instead of way to go. and "ty" and "yw" instead of thank you and your welcome. I have a hard time with this because I am used to just typing out the words..LOL |

It's extremely annoying. I don't see how it can be considered cute, cool, or hot in any way to write like this. Personally, had someone turned an application in to me that looked like that, I would have laughed in that person's face and said, "You're kidding, right?" I don't take people seriously if they can't right seriously. Sorry. |

How people communicate among their friends should be between them. However, if those people are not able to communicate with others in a manner that can be understood, everyone loses. As a rule, employers are intolerant of spelling and grammar errors on job applications: the paperwork is thrown away. Thus, applicants that are qualified for a job miss out on a chance for self-improvement. For me, the less I use abbreviations and improper grammar, the better I feel about my ability to communicate my meaning. |
