Hurricane "Ivan the Terrible"............Dee

Hurricane Ivan hit us late Wednesday. We had planned to just stay at the house, because we felt like things would be okay. Only they werent.

We had walked over to our neighbors house, at about the time the winds and the rain picked up a little bit. We didn't think it was anything to be concerned about. We popped in a movie, kids and all of us adults got comfortable in the living room...and watched about 3/4 of the movie, when the power suddenly shut off. We were like "awwww, it was just getting good!!" My hubby and our friend who owned the house, were at the back window looking out at the rain picking up more. Our friend noticed it first, and was showing my hubby. Talkin about " Look at all that stuff flyin around over there....looks like a bunch of birds." Then they both yelled " TORNADO!!!! GET TO THE BATHROOM!!!!" At that moment, I had NEVER been so scared in my entire life! I grabbed my daughters hand and into the bathroom. First thing I looked for was something to hold onto, incase this thing was gonna want to suck us up. So I opened up the cabinets under the sink, wrapped my arm around the pipes, other arm around my daughter and pretty much laid on top of her. It was SOOO loud. and the doors in the bathroom were shaking like crazy. You could hear the tornado pick the roof up and slam it back down. The sound of glass shattering everywhere...Then all was silent. I kept my cool afterwards ( For my daughters sake ) and walked out the door to check on damages to my own house. Half my roof was missing, windows busted out...and a garage door that looked as If It had been through a metal grinder. All in all, we were safer at my neighbors house, ALOT less damage than my own home. Alot of my neighbors came to the house after it happened, to help my husband patch up the roof....they really impressed me! Between 5-10 people died as a result of this tornado. Very very sad. And I do feel as If me and my family got another chance at life.

Date: 9/19/2004 11:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 62900    I'm so sorry! Are you able to live in your house now? My daughter-in-law's mom is staying in the top floor of her home now (new home she just had built) with the bottom flooded. She is in the Dominiquin Republic. I guess a lot of people are just glad to be alive but it's going to be hard with your homes either gone or badly damaged! My heart goes out to all of you.
