Study: Single People Die Sooner
United Press International
A 10-year study of 10,000 people in Britain found living alone might shave several years off a single person's life.
The Advertiser in Australia reported Tuesday the poor diets of those living alone might account for their shortened life span. The findings are published in the Journal of Health Economics.
"These results tend to suit the long-term single who definitely stands out as being at risk of mental illness, depression and becoming sicker earlier," said Carol Grbich of the Flinders University School of Medicine.
Grbich suggested social integration could help single people squeeze out a few more years on Earth.
"People who have good relationships with family and friends are just as well off as their married or coupled counterparts," she said. "But the general rule is that people who are married or in a couple do live longer."
