Completely Numb

I don't really understand what happened, so well, this is exactly why I'm asking someone to explain. I'm sure there is some type of scientific explanation...

Today (and I won't go into detail because that's not an issue to discuss here) I became so upset from something (and I know it was because I was upset) that I became numb. Not completely numb... but almost completely numb... it's a really hard feeling to explain, but I hope someone understands what I'm trying to say/has experienced themselves. So please, someone if you know, tell me what this means and if possible the exact cause of it.

Date: 9/3/2004 2:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 62838    Do you mean mentally or physically? When we're shocked and/or upset to an extreme degree, some people will shut down emotionally as a way of coping with what has happened. It's a way that the mind can find immediate peace, so it blocks everything out as a kind of survival coping mechanism, and it feels like numbness... most of the time it's temporary and the result of a shock or something very upsetting, but it can also happen as a result of depression or many other things.... if you don't feel better soon you should see a doctor so you can talk about this with someone who can help. *bighugs* - Kokoro

You feel emotionally, physically and mentally numb. Some people get this when they are depressed. The weird part of it, is that it doesn't feel like all these feelings are gone but just bottled up in one part of you and it feels like your insides are gonna flood with emotion, but you can't seem to release it and I think that's why some people turn to cutting. It happens when we become overloaded with emotions and stress over being upset.
