Kady sat quietly at her desk as Reese talked. She twirled the pencil in her hand, wondering if this is what she would be doing for the rest of her life. She could picture herself at the age of fifty and still fighting the supernatural with these people.
She turned her head to look at Collin, who was now asking questions about what they were trying to find. Kady smiled, taking in how handsome Collin was. She had noticed it the first time she had seen him, but had kept it all to herself.
She finally snapped out of it when Reese handed her a shield. "Don't let him hit you. He does, you go down, and you never wake up. This guy has good aim."
"Aim?" Kady stared at him blankly.
"Well we can see who wasn't listening," Reese frowned.
"Sorry," Kady looked at the shield.
"He throws boomerangs," Reese explained again. "It's an old fashioned one, with spikes, but it's effective nonetheless. He also has a way of bringing it back to him."
"So its like a video game," Kady said.
"Well, I suppose you could look at it that way if you want to," Reese frowned at the suggestion. "Although, unlike video games, you don't have twenty lives to spare."
Emma tilted her head. "It shouldn't be too hard. We've seen really bad before, haven't we?"
"Trust me, it can get much worse," Reese said without hesitation. He handed a sword to Julie, his face filled with worry. "Just watch yourselves, and be careful."
"If worse comes to worse, we just take a day off of school," Collin joked.
"I can only hope that's the worst that will happen to you," Reese shook his head.
"You sound scared," Julie said. "You're making us nervous."
"You should be nervous," Reese turned away. "We don't know if you'll survive."
Kady smiled and held up the shield. "We'll be just fine."
