Anyone ever have a dog with mange?

I adopted a dog back in April. She is so sweet. When we got her she was horrible looking, she'd been through treatment for mange and was healing. She is a great Pryrenes. Over the course of 2 months her hair grew back and she was beautiful.

Than, for some reason the mange came back. She has lost most her hair and still losing. There is hair everywhere! She itches and scratches herself constantly. I have to use the shop vac on the furniture to get it all the hair up because my vacumn cleaner can't do the job. I've taken her to several different vets and have spent over $500.00 on her trying to get it cleared up again. They say she is young enough to beat it, but I'm having my doubts. I'm at the point I'm almost ready to go ahead and just shave the remaining hair off and tell people when I take her on a walk that she is a special hairless dog we got to prevent allergies.

Unfortantly I'm not going to be able to take her back to the vet for a couple of months, we are tapped out finacially from the dog.

Have any of you ever had a dog with mange? If so, did it ever clear up..Is there hope?

Date: 8/9/2004 8:06:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    We've done the dips, oral mange medication, antibiotics for skin infection, vitamins for sensitive skin, expensive sensitive skin dog food, two different salves and benadril for the itching! My hutch looks like a mini-pharmacy.
Date: 8/9/2004 8:08:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Wise, About how long did it take to clear up? It started out along her eyebrows and straight down her nose, that seems to have cleared up, her hair has grown back on that part of her---it's the rest of her body that is a mess.
Date: 8/9/2004 8:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    What kind of mange is it? Sarcoptic or demodectic?
Date: 8/9/2004 8:34:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    It's the demodectic mange, they said it can be brought on by stress and she did go into heat right before the mange returned..we've had her fixed since than.
Date: 8/9/2004 9:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 3648    My doggy Molly got that right after she was in season...We think a stray dog might have given it to her...but who knows...I know I got some stuff at a pet store that worked wonders...It was really bad (the mange) to the point I didn't think she was going to make it. I wish I could remember the name of the stuff I used...I'll ask my kids later and let you know...
Date: 8/9/2004 9:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 3648    Also it took a good 2 weeks or a little more for her to get over it...one place one her back still carries a scar...
Date: 8/9/2004 10:52:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Thanks Grey Eyed Girl, I don't think the kind Jesse has is contagious, or I hope not because I'd hate to think she could pass it on to my girls! At this point I'll try anything, so hopefully you can find out the name of what you used.
Date: 8/9/2004 12:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 18527    I'd use ivermectin or premectin it's prescription only... demodex is a pain to get rid of...
Date: 8/9/2004 2:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 27534    I remember about 90 days total.... I do not remember any recurring symptoms....this was a 6 week old abandoned pup that had the mange and rickets... the best dog I had....it has been gone for 20 years now.
Date: 8/9/2004 4:55:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Thanks Kethria, I've been using Mitaban which was prescribed..I'll call the doc and see if I can get the stuff you said without an appointment, just can't afford a trip to the vet at this point!
Date: 8/9/2004 5:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Wise, I looked up sulphar and it is used on the other kind of mange, or I'd give that a try to! Also found a site that says to shave them before dipping, so I am going to shave her tomorrow, bathe her with Benzolyl Peroxide and dip her with the last of the dip I have the day after that...see if that works. If it doesn't, I'll try what Kethria recommended.
