Just as she was about to open the box, Aurora hears a slight scraping noise. Startled, her body jumps as her head turns towards the sound. She looks at the door, no, not there. The scraping starts again. Aurora looks down to find the Placette moving to the moon on the board, without the aid of human hands.
“DO NOT OPEN” the spirit of the board spelt out as it went back to the figure of the moon.
“You are saying it’s evil?”
The spirit replied “Yes” followed by spelling out “Put it back”. Aurora found her hands somewhat shaky as she slid the box back under Jessi’s bed. Out of the corner of her eye, she notices the placette moving once again. It moves back to the sun and then spelt out “Good Girl”. Aurora feels a slight smile touch her face.
“Who are you here for?” Asks Aurora, feeling as if the spirit meant her no ill will.
“You” was the spirit’s reply.
“What do you want me to do?”
“Find Love” was the boards response as the placette then moved to “Good Bye”
Just as the movement on the board ended, Jessi walked back into the room with a six-pack of soda and a bag of BBQ chips. She looked a little breathless, as if she had been running.
“I am SOOO Sorry!! It just dawned on me that we didn’t close the board properly! You okay?”
“Yeah, I’m perfectly fine. I closed the board already.” Replied Aurora with a smile on her face.
“Cool, let’s put this thing up and watch a little TV!”
“Sounds great to me!”
As Jessi put up the board, Aurora went about to blowing out all the candles that were arranged around the room. Reaching Jessi’s dresser, Aurora bends down to blow out the last remaining candles. Coming back up, she glances at the mirror. She see’s Jessi bending over to place the board at the bottom of her closet but in the closet entryway, in vision as plain as day a gruesome figure stood looking at Aurora through the reflection in the glass. The body mostly blended with the shadows, but the face was easy to see, looking like burnt flesh combined with the texture of was from a burnt candle. They eyes were orange yellow with slits of a snake for the iris. He smiled a smile that looked like the ragged jaws of a great white and mouthed “MINE” as he then drew his eyes down to Jessi.
Aurora found herself paralyzed with fear, not being able to find a voice or move. Suddenly, a warm spread up her side as a mist formed on the mirror. It was as if someone had breathed their breath on the mirror surface. An invisible fingertip began writing in the gray mist “LEAVE NOW! RIGHT NOW!!” Just as suddenly as the paralysis came, it left, and Aurora spun around to look at the room. It appeared normal, but the eerie feeling and uneasiness was still there.
“Jessi, I’m suddenly not feeling so good. You mind if I take a rain check on this over night thing?”
“No, I don’t mind. You sure you’re okay? You aren’t freaked out are you?”
“Nah” Aurora replied with as “Tough as nails” note to her voice. “It takes more than that to scare this ol’ girl!”
“Alright…” Replies Jessi regretfully
Jessi walks Aurora to the door, gives her a quick hug and Says “ I’ll talk to you tomorrow. I hope you feel better!”
“Sure thing, Jess. And be careful with that board, I don’t feel comfortable thinking of you using it alone.”
“Oh Aurora! You’re such a fraidy Cat! I do it all the time!! “
“I know, but maybe you should put it away until you read more up on it.”
With a Big Sigh, Jessi rolls her eyes, and replies, “Okay, I promise!”
“Cool beans, tomorrow then”
It is just about midnight as Aurora walks herself home. “Not too far to go,” she thinks to herself. “ Just down the road.” She takes in steady breaths, trying to calm her nerves. That was just her imagination that caused all of that in Jessi’s room. That wasn’t real. She changed “Not real, not real, not real” to herself all the way home. As she reached for her overnight back and shuffled through the clothing to find her keys, Aurora Abruptly notices that the Crickets have stopped Chirping and the wind that was blowing suddenly stopped.
