Are we winning the war? It depends on how you look at it. Some say that war is won by killing off your enemy. If we look at the body count, we are winning. tens of thousands of terrorist have died since 9/11 and almost a thousands troops. Even if we count the civilian deaths in 9/11 and in spain and so forth it doesn't add up to the body count of the bad guys. Is the world a safer place? No, I don't think so. I also don't believe it's any more dangerous than it was. Terrorsim hasn't increased. They are much more limited now. They are still dangerous and effective, but their network has been interrupted and it makes it harder for them to function. However, they still can function, and we all now that it's not how often they strike but when they strike. Will this war ever be won? No. Terrorism will always be here. It always has and always will. We will sacrifice as many generations as it takes to reach the political goals of this war. This war doesn't pit soldiers against civilians. Once a civilian picks up a weapon and chooses to fight he or she becomes a combatant. They are not invisible, you can spot them. you just have to be well disciplined. You can't get complacent and you must always have your guard up. Expect the unexpected. We win this war by one way and one way only. Kill every terrorist in the world. You can't reason with them. Can it be won? No, it cannot be... |

the more war there is. the more terrorists are bred. at this stage the best the US can do is to try its best to fix the israel palestine situation and set a good example in iraq. |

The kids with strict discipline and rules grow up to be good adults. The kids who get time-outs are the ones that end up in jail. Same thing goes for terrorists. When they are wrong, they must be punished. There will always be people like the terrorists, but you can't ignore them.So if you want to give the terrorists a time-out, elect Kerry. |

It can't be won but we must try. If countries didn't retaliate it would look like we are easily pushed around, bringing more terrorism to satisfy demands. |

how do you expect to win if you say there will always be terrorists Mfrompa? that is not true. Take northern Ireland for example where terrorism today is miniscule compared to ten or twenty years ago. since the 80s in fact terrorism has been on a general decline worldwide, apart from america where it has been on the rise. foreign policy is the most important thing to stop terrorists and i cannot think of a president who has been more inept in that department than George W. Bush. |

According to the 9-11 report released today, we have been very successful in stopping attacks. If we can't win, what do you suggest we do? Losing 900 soldiers in the Iraqi war is not losing an entire generation...Losing 900 soldiers is what was lost per week at the height of ww2. We will only fail if the general population loses heart, not because our soldiers can't do it. |

We have to win this one but it can not be done by military means alone. Diplomacy and foreign/economic aid are necessary. Giving wanna-be terrorists something worth living for instead of dying for would be a start. |

The war on terrorism can never be won. Terrorists have been around for ages, known by various names such as partisans, freedom fighters, the resistance, and guerillas. The idea behind terrorism is that it allows smaller groups of people a means of getting large governments to change their way of doing things. Already we have reacted to the events of 9-11, and changed many the way we did many things before that day. It has also caused us to expend a lot of tax payer dollars to fight an enemy that we cannot always find, and use troops that could be used elsewhere. We can take out a million potential terrorists tomorrow, but odds are that there will be twice that many waiting in the wings to take their place. |

If people could possibly get past the Bush bashing or their feel good personal agendas they could understand some facts. There will always be terrorists, we win small victories every day by catchiing or killing terrorists but more importantly by taking away opportunities for terror. The big gains in the war on terror will never make the headlines. Everytime a group of terrorists turns down a target as too risky we win, every time we I.D. a cell and put them under surveilance we win, Every time a former citizen of an oppresive regime experiences some liberties and gains knowledge that what the zealots and religious fanatics have told them is wrong, we win. Putting this in the context of a conventional war with a victory date is wrong, we should have never used that term. It's a long term awareness and prevention. |

I must say once again how completely i disagree with the statement that there "will always be terrorists". education and fair treatment are the biggest enemies of terrorism, not bombs or soldiers, once again i cite the example of Northern Ireland. we need to look at what causes people to become terrorists and deal with those issues. if you accept the statement that terrorists become terrorists simply because they hate american freedom then you are misguided. |

I believe that the war against terrorism can be won. IMO, winning the war does not mean the cessation of terrorist acts; it means the risks have been decreased to acceptable levels. For example, people continue to die from the Black Plague, but the national risks are minimal, some 10-20 people in the US each year. It was once feared that the Cold War would never end, that the US and the Soviet Union would continue to escalate the nuclear arms race until some maniac pushed the button. The Soviet Union no longer exists. The war on terrorism will be won when peace-loving Muslims rise up against the fanatics that have sabotaged their faith and refuse to participate in a jihad against the West. |

I find it interesting that when one mentions terrorists, the first thing that comes to mind is Muslims. Most people don't realize it, but there are just as many terrorists of other faiths that may be Italian, German, East Asian, African, or Latin American. Drug lords are notorious for commiting acts of terrorism, and do not rule out American targets of opportunity in Central and South America or the Carribean. In fact, some drug lords have been known to pay bounties to anyone who could kill an America, involved in anti-drug operations or take out an aircraft or radar site involved in anti-drug operations. We even have terrorists here in the United States. The latest batch are eco-terrorist, who will go around destroying new homes and buildings during construction, will sabotage trees in certain areas of the country, and commit other acts which can cause injury or death to those in the loggin industry. There are also other groups in the US who have shown the potential to commit acts of terrorism. In fact Timothy McVeigh was a terrorist. That is why the war on terrorism can never be won. As times change, and governments change their positions, there will always be people who are not happy with the way things are done, and will voice their opinions and ideals on such things by commiting acts of terrorism. |
