July 22

1793- Alexander MacKenzie reaches the Pacific Ocean, completeing the 1st continental crossing.

1861- U.S.Congress states that the Civil War is being fought to preserve the Union, not to end slavery.

1862- 1st draft of Emancipation Proclamation submitted to Cabinet by President Abraham Lincoln.

1905- A severe yellow fever epidemic begins in New Orleans, Louisiana, killing 400 people. The epidemic lasted into October, but was finally brought under control by US government antimosquito campaign.

1934- Gangster John Dillinger, Public Enemy No. 1, is shot and killed outside a movie theater in Chicago, Illinois, by the FBI.
