Have you ever met someone who thinks Harry Potter promotes Satanism?

Has anyone here ever met some (or indeed, is someone) that thinks Harry Potter promotes Satanism and Black Magic??

I was browsing through Snopes and found an article (http://www.snopes.com/humor/iftrue/potter.htm) talking about the people who think that it does promote Satanism.

One of the things they wrote on here was...:

Dear Christian, This is the most evil thing I have laid my eyes on in 10 years . . . and no one seems to understand its threat. The Harry Potter books are THE NUMBER ONE selling children's books in Barnes & Noble or Waldenbooks storefront.

Go to Amazon.com and read the reviews. Hear the touting by educators and even Christian teachers about how "It's great to see the youth so eagerly embracing the reading experience!"

Harry Potter is the creation of a former UK English teacher who promotes witchcraft and Satanism. Harry is a 13 year old 'wizard.'

Her creation openly blasphemes Jesus and God and promotes sorcery, seeking revenge upon anyone who upsets them by giving you examples (even the sources with authors and titles) of spells, rituals, and demonic powers.

I think the problem is that parents have not reviewed the material. The name seems harmless enough . . . Harry Potter. But that is where it all ends. Let me give you a few quotes from some of the influenced readers themselves:

"The Harry Potter books are cool, 'cause they teach you all about magic and how you can use it to control people and get revenge on your enemies" said Hartland, WI, 10 year old Craig Nowell, a recent convert to the New Satanic Order Of The Black Circle. "I want to learn the Cruciatus Curse, to make my muggle science teacher suffer for giving me a D." (A 'muggle' is an unbeliever of magic.)

Or how about the REALLY young and innocent impressionable mind of a 6 year old when asked about her favorite character: 6 year old Jessica Lehman of Easley, SC. "Jesus died because He was weak and stupid."

And here is dear Ashley, a 9 year old, the typical average age reader of Harry Potter: "I used to believe in what they taught us at Sunday School," said Ashley, conjuring up an ancient spell to summon Cerebus, the three-headed hound of hell. "But the Harry Potter books showed me that magic is real, something I can learn and use right now, and that the Bible is nothing but Boring lies."

DOES THIS GET YOUR ATTENTION?

If not, how about a quote from High Priest of Satanism: "Harry is an absolute god send to our cause," said High Priest Egan of the First Church Of Satan in Salem, MA. "An organization like ours thrives on new blood (no pun intended) and we've had more applicants than we can handle lately. And, of course, practically all of them are virgins, which is gravy."

(Since 1995, open applicants to Satan worship has increased from around 100,000 to now . . . 20 MILLION children and young adults!)

It makes me physically ill, people!

But, I think I can offer you an explanation of why this is happening.

Children have been bombarded with action, adventure, thrills and scares to the point Hollywood can produce nothing new to give them the next 'high.' Parents have neglected to see what their children are reading and doing, and simply seem satisfied that 'Little Johnny is interested in reading.'

AND . . . educators and the NEA are PUSHING this with NO WARNING as to the effects or the contents.

Still not convinced? I will leave you with something to let you make up your own mind. And finally, a quote from the author herself, J. K. Rowling, describing the objections of Christian reviewers to her writings:

"I thinkit's absolute rubbish to protest children's books on the grounds that they are luring children to Satan," Rowling told a London Times reporter in a July 17 interview. "People should be praising them for that! These books guide children to an understanding that the weak, idiotic Son Of God is a living hoax who will be humiliated when the rain of fire comes ... while we, his faithful servants, laugh and cavort in victory."

My hope is that you will see fit to become involved in getting the word out about this garbage. Please FWD to every pastor, teacher, and parent you know. This author has now published FOUR BOOKS in less than 2 years of this 'encyclopedia of Satanism' and is surely going to write more. I also ask all Christians to please pray for this lost woman's soul.

Pray also for the Holy Spirit to work in the young minds of those who are reading this garbage that they may be delivered from its harm.

Lastly, pray for all parents to grow closer to their children, and That a bond of sharing thoughts and spiritual intimacy will grow between them.

Hmmmm...

So spill the beans...do you think that Harry Potter promotes Satanism? Do you know someone who does? If so, what were your experiences with them when they talk about Harry Potter? Do you like Harry Potter? Do you think they're good for kids? What do you think Harry Potter promotes, if anything?

Crystal Peak

P.S I'm bored, can you tell? ;-)#

P.P.S On one USMers advice (*wink*) I am saying that the quotes in this article are fake

Date: 7/22/2004 10:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 36704    Children watch Superman and Spiderman and think they can become superheroes, doesn't mean they can. When I did a practicum for first grade there were two students telling another that he was evil for liking Harry Potter and that he was going to go to hell because of it.
Date: 7/22/2004 10:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 48812    yes, god forbid little kids should go running around pointing sticks at people and yelling spanish and latin phrases. Horrible, horrible stuff. *laughs* I'm sorry, but this is all rediculous.
Date: 7/22/2004 10:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 3419    first off only believe have of what you read from others....like the quote from Rowlings.....when someone takes lines of a quote and not the whole quote makes me think they are using the pieces of the quote to serve their purpose.....and as a writer...even if you really believed that stuff would your publicly say it so that it damages your reputation.........i know i wouldnt say anything like that to ruin my writing career and destroy my income......and as for harry potter being satanic....didnt they say they same thing about Disney's Snow White and the Seven Drawfs years ago when it first came out too.....wizard of oz......ect ect ect.....the religous right just loves to pick something..a book..a movie...a singer ect...and make 'it' the scape goat of being the ulitmate evil.........happens all the time.....i think everyone has the right and needs to make their own decisions of morality, religion, and standards.....ps i bet half the people saying this kind of stuff have never even seen the movies or read one of her books........
Date: 7/22/2004 10:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 3680    Relegious fanatics will always find someway to relate everything to Satan. it's their way to "force" people into believing in God. Weirs ain't it? I believe in God but I like watching Harry Potter movies abd I have never had the urge to follow the dark Lord. I remember when I was younger, they tried to say the smurfs were demonic too. Hahaha, they smurfs, and lets not forget the Ninja Turtles, or the Tellytubbies. Yeah, it looks like everything will lead you to Satan... we are all doomed...lol. Good post.
Date: 7/22/2004 10:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 3680    wow look at my spelling... horrible....
Date: 7/22/2004 10:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 62675    This is ridiculous!! I don't think JK Rowling said that. Some of the "morals" may be questionable, but kids do that stuff to each other anyways! I think the books are great I am addicted! I have read each one at least 20 times. And when my 5 year old is old enough to read good enough for those books, he is more then welcome to read them. He has seen the movies though and loves them. Oh and he still preaches to me about Jesus so they haven't converted him yet! These are the same people that burn literary classics and ban books from being taught. They are extremists. I think my aunt may beleive this rubbish cause when ever you mention the movies or books she gets a weird look on her face. But she has never said anything.
Date: 7/22/2004 10:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 53558    No. I can't say that I have..(",)..
Date: 7/22/2004 10:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 49976    LOL thats nuts!! My grandma knows this woman and saw her in the grocery store one day,the cartons of coke had pics of Harry Potter on them she wouldnt buy any because she said her husband would get mad at her since it was witch craft, thats crazy,I don't think they have read any of the books, there good books & they make kids want to read,I don't see anything remotely evil about that.

Date: 7/22/2004 10:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    NO! I don't think it promotes any such thing and I've read all the books several times and love them. My 14 yr old daughter says her school library doesn't carry any of the Potter books for that reason. I gave her a mission when school starts: To find out if they have the Wizard of Oz in the library..anyone have any other suggestions on books with magic that might be in a High school library?? Also, in elementary school her teacher borrowed her copy of Harry Potter and began reading it allowed to the class..she had to stop when a parent complained. Guess some people have nothing better to worry about.
Date: 7/22/2004 10:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 10722    Even if it did, I don't see it as a problem.
Date: 7/22/2004 10:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 19613    AAAAARGH! Please author, you must insert a lartge disclaimer in the above post. that specific article including those "comments" have been posted here before on usm in harry potter debates. they are FAKE FAKE FAKE! it was a satirical hoax that too many people are reading and believing. JK Rowling never said those things, those children never said those things. it was a joke!
Date: 7/22/2004 10:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 19613    unless i am mistaken. www.theonion.com was the original source of the article. if you go there im sure you can see it was not meant to be taken seriously.
Date: 7/22/2004 11:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 53284    I read a few things on the internet about someone who holds that belief, but I've never met anyone who actually believes that. It's just such a silly thing to say.
Date: 7/22/2004 11:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 47218    forget about the people who think Harry Potter promotes Satanism. I want to meet the people who believe that the above article is authentic and that J.K. Rowling actually said that her books were intended to lead children to Satan. I want to ask these people how they find the front door in the mornings.
Date: 7/22/2004 12:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 59418    That's insane...lol
Date: 7/22/2004 12:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 62728    Mollycat, I think that has to be the funniest thing I have read today. Definitely brought a huge smile to my face. Believe it or not, I do actually know someone who believes that Harry Potter is evil and can actually tell you that they want nothing to do with it and will leave the room if someone mentions Harry Potter. It's nuts. It's all because her pastor told her it was evil. She won't even look into any of it herself. It's kind of frustrating. -DeltaRebel
Date: 7/22/2004 12:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 43948    My mother stands by the whole satanic aspect of Harry Potter. But that is too bad on her part. I am a committed Harry fan, so I wonder what she thinks about that...
Date: 7/22/2004 3:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    I wonder if Satanist parents worry about their kids reading the Christian bible?
Date: 7/22/2004 4:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 50678    Harry Potter isn't evil because it isn't real magick, witchcraft isn't done with wands and stuff, plus witchcraft isn't satanism!! Satanism is a different religion!! The only part that is close to real witchcraft in Harry Potter is with the herbology(sp)!! Most kids don't even look at it that way, most kids that read harry potter will never practice witchcraft!!
Date: 7/22/2004 4:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 50678    I practice witchcraft for the spirituality more then the magick!!
Date: 7/22/2004 4:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 50678    No one can go to hell for reading a book!! That is just stupid!! lol!!
Date: 7/22/2004 4:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 3680    all i know is that one minute i was watching harry potter, and i had a strange urge to sacrifice a live chicken... what gives?

Date: 7/22/2004 4:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    My future mother in law is adamant that Harry Potter is disgusting because it promotes the occult. we have knock down drag out fights about it. I say it is harmless fantasy. This same person loves Lord of the Rings though. I just don't get it. Both show magic being used to get rid of your enemies.
Date: 7/22/2004 9:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    There is a whole differnt ball game when a child thinks it might become a super hero as opposed to becoming a satanist. NOW I've been told a dozen times that a satanist doesnt worship satan, yeah ok, right, I agree that this sort of majic does promote witchcraft as one can see in this posts findings. Too many pooo pooo the fact that their is majic, bad majic and good , from good sources and bad, too many people do not understand the spritual or the supernatural, so to them of course this is just play time for the kids, OH let them use their imagination. I'm all for kids using their imagination but not in the wrong direction and anyone knowing about the spriitual forces in this world knows that witchcraft and that sort of majic is not from the powers of God the Father of creation. Then will come the "how do you know" or your wrong, so be it, I know what I know what I know. Agree or disagree this is my opinion based on experience.
Date: 7/22/2004 9:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    Kurt, ya know many of us watch that sort of thing, many christians even have read harry potter. And its not the thing of using majic to get rid of evil, All power is majic, or super natural. From what I have seen and learned, there are two powers, and ya know I dont want to stiffle a kid either, but one should guide their child into the truth of the spiritual realm. To some apparently its different truths. To we christians, our truth is that if it isnt from God, then it is from his counter part satan. Now both are supernatural powers and I want my children and grandchildren to learn how to tap into those powers. The super natural power of God of course and for those that think there is no power just ask a witch, they also know THERE is power, supernatual, spiritual power. But as I was saying to we chrsitians, its has to be Gods supernatual power, simply because we are not to partake of the powers of other gods, which of course the bible says that satan is a god of this world. Of course to those that have never had any type of supernatual experiences even any comment on this post about majic or supernatural is strange to them. I guess one has to see it to beleive it. I've seen plenty. I also know that I have turn the supernatural power of God against certain supernatural powers of darkness, and then the person was not able to use the powers of darkness to do bad anymore. Sorry this was so long, I don't get the puter often, have to make it count.
Date: 7/22/2004 9:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    OH and author, If you got this from the onion, its not a very good source, however I have seen lots of what you have posted here at other web sites.
Date: 7/23/2004 6:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 4144    can we say FICTION? i read the boxcar children as a child but did i run away and go live in a boxcar? no.
Date: 8/8/2004 7:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 27161    I saw an episode of that TBN thing with that fat precher guy John Hauge, who talked about it with a so called educated religious doctrate holding person, oye the funny things they came up with.
