Plagerism is lame

In MY opinion....just for you dark phoenix lol

When you copy and paste something and use it without quotes and without giving credit to the original author you are committing plagerism. Not only that but you're misleading people into believing that you actually come up with the things you write and that the thoughts in the comments and posts are your own original thoughts and poems. There are some people that are really bad about doing this and try to pass off other author's works as their own on a fairly consistent basis. Try writing your own comments and posts and have an independent thought of your own every once in awhile, you might even find it refreshing.

Date: 7/21/2004 6:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    I'm sure we've ALL done it on occasion...(Unintentionally and harmlessly of course) but it's really sickening when people do it on a consistant basis and/or intentionally. Those are the ones who would never survive a College English course.
Date: 7/21/2004 6:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    Duuuur and I meant by all doing it now and then by not giving credit where credit is due. Not blatently taking the credit for...
Date: 7/21/2004 6:53:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    yeah I see it quite often Little Jung
Date: 7/21/2004 6:54:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    lol they wouldn't survive most college courses Becky
Date: 7/21/2004 6:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 19613    if you ask MY opinion, when you copy and paste something and use it without quotes and without giving credit to the original author you are committing plagerism. Date: 7/21/2004 6:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    does that work better for you dark phoenix? lol
Date: 7/21/2004 6:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    Tell me about it. I hate it when a post that someone has copyed gets more hits than my original ones get.lol. Sure I may talk alot of nonsense sometimes but hey at least it's my nonsense.
Date: 7/21/2004 6:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    I'm not talking about In The News Stories or news articles copy and pasted for a debate or discussion Kurt those generally everyone knows it's a news article and the author is given credit.
Date: 7/21/2004 7:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 48812    Just remember, if you steal from one person, it's called plagerism. If you steal from an enemy, it's called gathering intelligence. :-p
Date: 7/21/2004 7:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    I know what you mean, I have seen poems put on here that where written by someone else 50 60 years ago and the author has not shown who the poet was. I think it stinks.
Date: 7/21/2004 7:06:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    that makes no sense uber, you can collect poetry, short stories and anything else or intelligence and that's not plagerism unless you try to pass the stuff off as your own
Date: 7/21/2004 7:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 33925    I remember a while back someone here posted a song under poems and passed it off as their own..It was not a well known song, so I am assuming this person figured noone would recognise it..but I did..I remembered the song from my childhood growing up in the church..and I made a point of commenting on that post and saying how I always loved that song..I dont understand why people feel its ok to plagerize anything. Do they not realise that this is the WWW and there are people from all over the world visiting this site and there is a good chance that SOMEONE may have seen their "original" work somewhere else?
Date: 7/21/2004 7:18:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    I don't know their motivation LL, I'm thinking they can't come up with things on their own so they resort to plagerizing so that people think they're "smart"
Date: 7/21/2004 7:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 48812    Dude, calm down--it's just a joke. I was just messing around. Didn't mean anything by it.
Date: 7/21/2004 7:33:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    I am calm, it just made no sense to me
Date: 7/21/2004 7:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    In defense of people who copy and paste...sometimes we do this to show that we are not the only person who feels a certain way, or to back up a statement. This does not mean that we do not have an original thought in our heads, merely that we know enough to look for corresponding thoughts and statements..and some people may actually not know that they must give credit to the source. Not a cop-out but a fact, not everyone is strong in English skills and as such would not know this.
Date: 7/21/2004 7:48:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    If you're 10 I can understand not knowing, otherwise that's a cop out that I won't accept. If you're smart enough to go look something up and copy and paste it, you're smart enough to know that you should give credit where credit is due. Using something copy and pasted to help support your view while giving credit to the original author is fine, not giving credit and not saying that you copy and pasted it, is deceiving.
Date: 7/21/2004 8:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 39949    thats right

Date: 7/21/2004 8:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    I agree...It bothers me when people try to take my ideas...In fact, someone took one of my poems off of here and took it to my English class and tried to pass it off as their own...That made me a little mad. I, for one, am too lazy to copy and paste so therefore I just stick to my own crazy thoughts...
Date: 7/21/2004 10:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 53558    Base, on my post I always put the authors name and if there isn't a name to be found I put author unknown...(",)..
Date: 7/21/2004 10:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 53900    I do that with news articles and songs but I have never takenn the credit for it as my own...honestly I have never noticed it on this site as a problem but then I havent been around a whole lot lately so maybe there is something I dont see but I do agree copying anything someone does and passing it off as yours is just not cool
Date: 7/21/2004 11:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    YES...this is seen FAR too often, it's sad.
Date: 7/21/2004 11:39:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    thanks for the comments, and yes You Choose it is seen far too often, especially when the person doing it is taking it from popular well known sites
Date: 7/21/2004 11:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    i agree, if i post from another site i put the webpage address there or give credit to the author. any time i do that type of post i'm trying to teach something and could say it no better than it was said the first time 8-)
Date: 7/22/2004 5:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 19613    oh, i just remembered why i hate plagarism. there was this competition a year or two ago held my mcdonalds or something i think, and you had to write a short story. my friend showed me one of the winning entries, and then he showed me the book "Mort" by Terry Pratchet. you think it's bad when someoen passes off a poem as their own on USM? how annoyed would you be if you had been one of those people with ORIGINAL work that lost out on a competition to someone like that?
Date: 7/22/2004 8:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 6867    I don't know, I haven't really seen any around here, but then again I don't pay attention. I swipe simple silly things like the "what's your favorite color" type questions from a nurse board I frequent but that's about it. I don't think those kinda questions are copyrighted. Too tired of coming up with original ideas at school to come online and have something intelligent or creative to say.
Date: 7/22/2004 8:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 6867    lol...I remember I learned about plagerism at a really young age...I guess when I was in 3rd grade, and my teacher asked us to write a poem for english. I didn't want to write one, so I found one in an encyclopedia. It was the one about: don't walk in front of me, I will not follow, don't walk behind me, blah, blah, blah...I think the last line was something like...Just walk beside me and be my friend. And me, being the little arse that I was thought, EUREKA! I have it man! And turned it in as my own. LOL, my teacher was quick to call my parents in for a conference...I learned then, plagarism was serious business, no doubt. I still don't know who wrote that poem. Sorry, just had to share :/
Date: 7/22/2004 1:48:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   All my professors keep telling us that we can get kicked out of college for plagerism. So yes its a very, very bad thing lol..
Date: 7/22/2004 2:55:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    lol Gia, nice and yeah all my instructors always mentioned the you can be thrown out for plagersim also Danielle
