The greatest sin

There is one sin that may be worse than all other sins. And it is taking place on a large scale today.

There are some religious people who maintain that one cannot declare any sin worse than any other ? that a person who takes an office pen is committing as grievous a sin in God's eyes as a murderer. But most people intuitively, as well as biblically, understand that there are gradations of sin.

Having a background in theology and a lifetime of teaching the Bible from the original Hebrew, I would like to offer evidence for demarcating one sin as worse than all others. Indeed it may be the only sin that God will not forgive: Committing evil in the name of God.

My basis is the Ten Commandments. The Commandment widely translated as "Do not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain," is imprecisely translated. The original Hebrew literally reads, "Do not carry the name of the Lord thy God in vain."

And, the Commandment continues, "for God will not hold guiltless (literally, "will not cleanse") whoever carries His name in vain."

As a strong believer that God (or whomever one credits with authoring the Ten Commandments) has at least as much common sense as I do, it seems inconceivable that God can "cleanse" (implying "forgive") a murderer, but not someone who said God's name when he shouldn't have. Therefore, the Commandment about the misuse ("misuse" is the translation of the New International Version of the Bible, my favorite translation) of God's name must be about far more than merely using God's name "in vain."

I admit that I come to this conclusion as a result of my Jewish education. Every yeshiva student learns early in life that the greatest sin is khillul Hashem, public desecration of the Name (of God), and conversely, the greatest mitzvah (commandment, good deed) is kiddush Hashem, public sanctification of the Name. I well remember, for example, one of my rabbis in yeshiva telling us not to go to what were then called "dirty" movies, but if we did go, to take off our yarmulkes first ? to enter a dirty movie theater announcing that we were religious Jews would desecrate God's name.

Imagine, then, how bad committing atrocities in God's name must be.

Let me explain this in another way.

When a secular person commits evil, it is surely evil, but it doesn't bring God and religion in disrepute. When a person commits evil in God's name, however, he destroys the greatest hope for goodness to prevail on earth ? widespread belief in a God who demands goodness (ethical monotheism). There is nothing as evil as religious evil.

The chanting of "Allahu akbar" ("Allah is the greatest") by militant Muslims as they commit barbaric acts against innocents around the world is the greatest sin a human can commit.

The Nazis were as cruel, and so were the communists. But they only sullied their own names (though in the case of the communists not nearly enough), not the name of God. But the immense amount of evil being caused by those Muslims murdering and slaughtering innocents in the name of God is hurting God's reputation. That is probably one reason the New York Times, with its anti-Judeo-Christian agenda, recently decided to print "God" whenever militant Muslims say "Allah." Why allow only Allah to get a bad name, when the Times can give God a bad one, too?

One can only pray that Muslim institutions will realize the immensity of damage done to the name of Allah and to Islam by those Muslims who preach or practice evil in the name of Allah and Islam ? and the even greater damage done by the rest of the Islamic world's failure to protest against this evil. If only they realized that they could go a long way in mitigating this damage by publicly announcing over and over that evil preached or committed in the name of Allah and Islam is the greatest sin and its practitioners will go to hell.

For if there is a hell, those who murder and torture the innocent while praising God are surely the first to go there.

A great article by Dennis Prager. Thought I'd share.

So, is there special punishment for those who murder or rape while invoking God's name?

Date: 7/21/2004 5:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 62801    The Apostle Paul commited evil in the name of God and God forgave him The bible says that the only sin that shall not be forgiven is blasphemy of the Holy Ghost. I think Dennis may be a bit misguided.
Date: 7/21/2004 5:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    If you don't mind me asking, isn't the holy ghost only a catholic thing? please correct me if I'm wrong.
Date: 7/21/2004 6:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 49101    As far as I know Kurt it is.
Date: 7/21/2004 11:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 22188    Nope, Kurt, the Holy Ghost is for protestants too...although it may be slightly different from the Catholic version. The Bible does teach, though, that there is a trinity--the Father, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Ghost, which is the part of God that dwells on earth and within His followers. It's the part of Him that's with us always. Hope that clears it up...And definately a thought-provoking post. I have to admit, the more I study the Bible, the more I want to learn ancient Greek and Hebrew so that I don't have to worry about all the possibly mistranslations...because believe me there are a LOT, and even the smallest word can make a HUGE impact!
Date: 7/21/2004 11:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    i think so. such as calling any war or persecution of a group of people a 'religous' war or that they are doing 'god's will' by killing a certain group (such as the inquisitions)..i think god visits upon these people great plagues or natural disasters. i've been wanting to research it and haven't taken the time, but i do know that several earthquakes happened in iraq during their 'jihad'...and i haven't yet researched when the black plague hit the world, but i would bet it was around the time of the inquisitions. i think it's god saying, i am NOT for this and don't think that i am.....
Date: 7/22/2004 9:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 54461    Very true Loveisall. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is wrong, and thats the only sin that will not be forgiven.
Date: 7/22/2004 10:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 11240    "Special punishment"? Since I believe eternal punishment is being separated from God's Kingdom in a resurrected body, and that those who are Judged "separated" will STILL have a remembrance of their human life and what it is they did to cause this separation, then their punishment is going to be of the kind that they put on themselves for having committed whatever they did. Is that "special punishment"? Since "special" can be defined as "peculiar to a particular person", then I would answer a definitive YES. God Bless.
Date: 7/22/2004 2:57:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 51173    Author 62801, I think the article assumes that those guilty of commiting these sins go without repenting.
Date: 7/22/2004 9:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    Of course the bible teaches us that there is no big or little sin, that sin is all the same in Gods eyes. God also tells us Mt:12:31: Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
Mt:12:32: And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

Date: 7/24/2004 7:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 58681    I believe that all sins can be forgiven. We have all committed sins in all of our many lives. Some are sins created by our man made laws and some are sins of the soul. We all know the difference. There are many innocents in all wars. Peace be with you.
Date: 7/27/2004 9:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 55255    boondock saints?
Date: 7/27/2004 9:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    No one can honestly answer this, simply because no one knows. But one does know that killing another human is ultimately considered by society to be not condoned. How simple is that? If we are to believe in God or a Higher Power, then so should we just know what crimes are most grave. Surely stealing a lipstick or compact can never be equated to taking a human life. Most of us have a "built in" sense of right and wrong, have a compassion that unless we are mentally ill or unstable ensures that we will not harm or murder our children, other family members or anyone. It seems that even though has laws that protect us from those without a conscience, there are still many more with conscience and who have a reverence for life and the compassion to maintain a society to live without abnormal fear of being killed at any given moment. As for the religious aspect, it should not matter. Being a decent human being should never have a "reward", it is enough to be decent, civilized human being, unknown to the penal system of society. Anything less is time and punishment deserved.
Date: 8/6/2004 10:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 62838    Nobody but God can decide the fate of any one person. It's meaningless to discuss the fate or punishment of others because, the fact is, it is not our judgement to make. But I did find it very interesting to read the Hebrew version of the "Lord's name" commandment. I've never heard of this before but I'm interested to know more.... I'll have to look into it. - Kokoro.
