WHAT A STEAL!!! MissC.

I was at an antique shop downtown a coupl eof weeks ago, and I found two very old instruments for sale. (Pardon the typo's I am wearing gloves right now)

One was a violin, solid back nice colour, and good resonating tone when I tapped it. (Not a standard way to check, but I like my method.) So anyhow, the violin was 28 dollars. Then upon further in spection of the shop, I found a cello for 45 dollars. I thought WOWEE! You don't find instruments at that price very often so I put them on layaway. Bot are in very sad shape, but I am convinced I can fix them. And the violin I finally pulled out today.

The reason for wearing the gloves is that I am working on it right now, and I must say she is BEAUTIFUL! And the best part is, I just took the top off and inside ther is a repair tag dated 1942, another pencil mark with the date 1953, another tag dated 1969, but the best one... is dated 1927!

This is a very old instrument and I can't WAIT to finish fixing her up. She is going to sound delicious! I am so excited! I may multiply my investment return by at least 10 if I play my cards right!

Date: 7/20/2004 6:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    Well yes normally it does, but I took lessons from an Italian violin maker named Mr. Importuno, he taught me how to take the tops off etc. I have a violin at home right now that is worth over $10,000, which my mom bought for $500. I love repairing string instruments.

Date: 7/20/2004 6:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 10245    Congrats and good luck! My best find, so far, has been a J. Roybal painting that I found at a garage sale for $5. They usually retail for $250-$600. Not bad... but nothing like that violin from Mom!

Date: 7/20/2004 6:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 27583    as a young child i grew up listening to my great grandfather constantly play pop goes the weasel on his fiddle . he passed away at the young age of 104. after his death we learned that his fiddle was in fact a 1605 strato. this caused so much greed to show its face in some of our relatives that we decided to donate it to a chicago instatution for 100 years and let our future genorations worry about the future of this fiddle. wooden nickel

Date: 7/21/2004 7:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 6358    You can fix up old ones and they are still worth money. I am a woodwind person myself.
Date: 7/21/2004 5:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 47296    Sounds like you may have done real well. Old musical instruments tend to resale very well when they are fixed up. Dealing in antiques, I am constantly looking for the good steal. My latest steals have been several pieces of late 1800s Haviland china for $10 a piece, A Roseville Clematis vase for $70, and two vintage Fleuger reels for $15 a piece. As for those who think you decrease the value of old things by fising them up, that is not necessarily true. I refinish old furniture all the time, and usually make a lot more than I paid for it. If we find an old clock that doesn't work, it goes to the shop. We bought one clock for $40, and ended up paying $80 to have it cleaned and repaired. It was a reproduction of a late 1700s European brass clock, but was still woth $1200 as a reproduiction. The originals sale in the neighborhood of $50,000.
