Hot Check

I have a bit of a dilema. I had received a letter from a credit agency saying that they had a returned check that I had written to Stein Mart for $300. I have never even set foot in a Stein Mart much less bought $300 of merchandise from them. So, I found out what the check number was and went to my banks site to look at the check. Well, the check had been written out by my mom. She even signed her name on my check. (I guess they didn't check to well because the name on the check didn't match up with the signature.) At first I was like that's wierd, because I KNOW my mom would not purposely do that. I had gotten my checking account overdrawn a few months ago. My mom gave me the money to fix it, and I asked her to keep my check book so I wouldn't be tempted to write any more checks. I think what happened was she mixed up her check book with mine. My mom has really high blood pressure and is really stressed out right now...so I don't want to tell her about it. But I don't know what to do. I don't have the money to pay for the $300, but I don't want to further stress my mom out. It's not worth her dying over. Right now they're threatning to put this on my credit, which would be really bad. I'm 14 wks. pregnant right now and this is really stressing me out. I know the stress can't be good for the baby. What should I do?

Date: 7/20/2004 2:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 62753    Well if you can spare the money go ahead and pay it, I am sure your mom is wandering what it hasn't cleared her bank - just tell her- it wont stress her out- she wouldn't have written the check if she didn't have it - stuff happens,,,,, lizard-1
Date: 7/20/2004 2:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30401    yeah it's just that she wrote the check a few months back, and now money is kind of tight. I think I may try to save some money and see if I can pay it. hopefully i can get the money before it goes on my credit.
Date: 7/20/2004 3:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 26363    Well your mom obviously mistook your checkbook for hers, she should have the money to cover the check she wrote so I don't think it will cause her any strain to repay money to you that she already wrote a check for. Did you speak to the company bout this? Just talk to her. It was a mistake that can easily be corrected. She wouldn't have written the check if she didn't have the money in the first place. I'm sure she will sort it.
Date: 7/20/2004 5:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 3648    As much as you don't want to bother your mom you may have to about it...If it was a mix up I'm sure she had/has the money in her own account to cover the written check...I know banks have charges for ISF and if the check is returned twice to your bank you're looking at at least a $50 (or more) charge and then after the second return to your bank you'll have to pick it up at the store it was written to with a return check charge on top of the amount it was written for..I hope y'all can work this out and save you some on the charges...
Date: 7/20/2004 8:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 24003    You should just tell her. Things like this happen. Im sure you two could work something out. Take care.
