Grant wasn't in school the next day, nor would he answer the message I sent him via email. When I knocked on his door after school, nobody answered - not even his mom, who was usually happy to see me. They must have went somewhere, I figured. Either that or Grant was really, incredibly mad at me for falling for Cameron that he couldn't stand the sight of me.
"I'm worried about him," I told Willow that afternoon when she came over to my house to talk to me. "He didn't come with us to see the Michael Moore movie yesterday, nor would he answer my message."
"You should be," was her terse answer. She glanced down the street, breathing heavily.
"What's wrong with him?" I asked. Did she know what happened to Grant?
She glared at me. "He feels you betrayed him. What are you doing talking to Cameron Mather and the Barbies anyway? Since when are they friendly with you?" she demanded.
I didn't care to answer her questions. All I cared about was what was wrong with Grant. "Where is he?"
"Grant? He's home." She nodded in the direction of his house. "I went to visit with him today, just to check and make sure he's okay ever since...he saw you kissing Cameron Mather."
I laughed. "He's jealous of Cameron, isn't he?"
"He's not jealous. He thought that you liked him in that way and how he feels as if you betrayed him."
"Look, Willow, I only liked him as a friend."
"He didn't take it that way." She poked at the ground with a stick. "Now answer my questions. Why were you hanging around the Barbies after class was over?"
I shrugged. "They wanted me to hang out with them. Cameron was asking if I'd go see a movie with him and his friends." She widened her eyes. "It's nothing," I assured her, not telling her the truth that it was something. Cameron wanted to help me look good and, in exchange, he'd be my lover. How could I tell her that I was now about ready to start dating Cameron Mather, my dream man?
"Well...be careful. I heard that he gets all touchy-feely on first dates."
"I'll be careful. And we're just going as friends."
Willow thought a moment. She cleared her throat. "I don't know. I don't trust them and I don't think he's asking you from the goodness of his heart. Something fishy is going on."
I sighed. "Willow, I'll be fine. And he seems like he's doing it to be nice."
