That's exactly how I feel too. I am in a state of constant exhaustion, but it's so much worse at nights. I have no idea what might be causing this. |

Thanks Pyriel. Unfortunately, I stopped drinking soda altogether because of the sugar and caffeine, so Mtn. Dew is out of the question lol. I try to stay moving though and that does help. |

It takes time to get accustomed to changing your lifestyle completely around and become nocturnal. I have worked 3rd shift all of my life for the most part and thrive well in the environment. I prefer the night time job... less people around, traffic is slower as no one is out, stores open 24 hours, so I can still get what I need, ATM Machines have become my best friend, to me, that is a 24 hour bank (-: I never really had to adjust to this, as it feel completely normal for me. Sometimes when people find it hard to work that shift, it is because they are staying awake more during the day as well as working at night. There really is nothing to "keep you awake" when you are that tired, and energy pills are not really good for your body, they make your heart rate speed up and that is not good for your heart all the time. Eating or drinking a bunch of sugary things only gives an instant surge of energy that is quickly gone and makes you even more tired than what you were before, coffee after awhile, does nothing but becomes a beverage that is warm to drink and does not keep you awake. THe only thing that really helps is to get to sleep within a couple hours of gettin home, and gettin up a couple hours before going to work for a while until your body becomes used to it.. I really have no suggestions, as like I stated.. I was born to be up at night for some reason. I myself could never work a 1st shift job, I cannot tolerate too much sun or bright light. I guess the graveyard shift is a shift that only a few can tolerate comfortably.. to some of us, it comes natural, as in my case, and to others, it becomes something that needs to be adjusted to. Sometimes the herb ginseng can give a natural boost, as well as adding some ferrous sulfate to your diet (iron). |

Probably not the best for your health, but switch to sugar if caffiene is not affective. Oh, and if your grumpy in the daytime or right after work... St. John's Wort. I use to work graveyard. |

Sur5r, thanks for replying. That is why this is so strange to me. I've been doing this for over a year now and have never had a problem with it until recently. I have always been the nocturnal sort but maybe I'm losing that. I used to be able to stay up over 24 hours and still be unable to even think about sleeping at night. I think today I will just try to sleep a very very long time. And thanks for your replies also, Hockey Man and Green Dream. |

One word-SUGAR! Actually, chocolate keeps me very awake during the night. I can never fall asleep if I eat chocolate after 8 o'clock at night. But that's just me. Maybe bring some coffee with you or some caffeinated soda? (Unless you want an actually healthy way to stay awake lol) I've also heard apples keep you awake better than coffee in the morning, so try that! Or maybe the reason you get so tired is because you're bored out of your mind, so make up some little games that you can do when you get bored (count how many cars pass by a window, or how many people are wearing a certain color of clothing when they come in, etc). |

Eating apples. When you drink caffeine, a chemical is released that clog little holes in your brain and prevents the sleepiness toxin from getting in. But ultimately, your brain creates more little holes for the sleepiness toxin to get in so you get tired anyway. Hm. Hope that made sense. - |

I have insomnia so it comes easy for me...lol but I'd have to say regular soda and snack foods will keep your sugar levels high (fruit, like apples) and making sure you move around, like walking. Bring something along that will keep you busy and alert. It will take some time to get used too but I'm sure things will turn out fine |

It just takes time to get used to it. You have to made yourself go to bed at the same time every day. Don't even mess with the energy drinks, they will make you worse off. |

If you have been at this job working the night shift and you have been fine all this time with it, then you may have sleep apnea, u have to go to your dr. for him to make sure thats it and he will put you on some scripts for it |

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. I do think part of it might be like Agent Q said, I'm bored out of my mind half the time when I work. It's slow at night. |
