Pro-Anorexia and Pro-Bulimia websites... A VERY disturbing trend.

I was disturbed to hear about a very popular and fast-growing trend in websites...pro-anorexia and pro-bulimia sites.

They not only give tips for practicing these illnesses but they support each other in furthering them. This was very upsetting for me to hear, since I've personally battled one of these illnesses myself.

I'm all for supporting others to be their best but only if that best constitutes prolonging their life. I do have a link as an example of this but I haven't provided it because I would then be promoting their cause.

What's your opinion on this?

Date: 7/16/2004 9:56:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Yep, disgusting is a much more fitting word than disturbing on this one.
Date: 7/16/2004 10:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 24003    I watched about this on Oprah very sad
Date: 7/16/2004 10:17:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    It was on Oprah huh, she does cover some important issues so I'm not surprised. I saw it on CNN the other day.
Date: 7/16/2004 10:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 62267    I am guilty of going to these sites to try and lose weight and still do. I have had an eating disorder. It's like the sites are as adictive as not eating ya know. Don't hate me for writing that but the sites really should be against the law. It would help teens alot.
Date: 7/16/2004 10:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 24003    Oh Kelly! Geez girl. I had no clue that you had an eating disorder.
Date: 7/16/2004 10:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    I think I saw it on Oprah too. I know I saw it somewhere. It's like these people have followers. They should take their sites off. It is devastating what it can do to minors and adults, as well. So sad. When I hear of this illness I think of Karen Carpenter. That was my first introduction to it.
Date: 7/16/2004 10:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 53157    Thats horrible!! what if someone is thinking about doing that and then comes across this site and thinks its cool. I have thought about doing these things a few times but then i thought whats the point, excersizing and eating right is the best policy because youve earned a healthy body. That just disgusts me that people would make websites like that. its really horrible.
Date: 7/16/2004 10:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 57232    When I was anorexic and bulemic in high school (yes I was both) I used to LOVE to read me some stories about people getting over the disease. I was such a sicko I used to read their stories to get some pointers in case I didn't use them yet! I'm glad I've stopped it, I'm not mental or anything but I sure do miss that body though and if I was today what I was then I'd be on the sites.
Date: 7/16/2004 10:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 62267    Oh I use to. I eat now. I have gotten up to 160 so now I am having bad thought but josh pulled me through it once and he'll do it again...I'm always depending on someone like a loser.
Date: 7/16/2004 10:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 57232    Has anyone heard about the "red bracelets"?
Date: 7/16/2004 11:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 62267    I don't call it anorexic though because I'm not. I just fast.
Date: 7/16/2004 11:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 62267    I'm just like u B.Monkey! I'm a phsyco!
Date: 7/16/2004 11:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 51070    Very, very sick and twisted. I am pro-freedom of speech and all, but this is just wrong.
Date: 7/16/2004 11:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 6867    I have never heard of these before. That's sad...I wish ppl could learn to be happy with their bodies. I know it's not that simple, but I wish it was.
Date: 7/16/2004 11:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 46091    Love and respect yourself; your health. With freedom (ie speech), comes responsibility of the listener or viewer to make a decision for themselves.
Date: 7/16/2004 11:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 57232    Freaq, you aren't a loser and it's good to have a friend that will help you through the times
Date: 7/16/2004 11:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 57232    Gia it was hard in high school, it was just plain ol' hard
Date: 7/16/2004 11:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 62267    thx b.monkey. I don't talk about this to many people.
Date: 7/16/2004 11:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 53157    I agree with b.monkey, freaq. Your not a loser. I'm glad you have a friend that cares for you a lot and will help you through anything
Date: 7/16/2004 11:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 62267    Thanks you guys...good to know I have friends here to talk to also.
Date: 7/17/2004 12:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 49091    I think its disgusting. I suffer from Aneroxia and I dont need ne one else encourging me to keep this up. >.<
Date: 7/17/2004 12:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 53054    I think that this is terrible.....how can someone be promoting these illnesses! It just saddens me...and the worst thing is that we can not do anything about it
Date: 7/17/2004 8:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 55689    i just checked out as couple of links...its very disturbing that such sites are just sitting there waiting for teenagers to read them.
Date: 7/18/2004 7:54:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Freaq...thanks for your words and honesty. You have nothing to be ashamed of by visiting these sites or having an eating disorder. I am only concerned about those of us who've had or have eating disorders being given support to stop and not continue. Thanks for commeting and hang in there, I understand the battle never seems to end though. ~HUGS to you.
Date: 7/18/2004 7:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Adrienne...you would be surprised just how many people have had or do have eating disorders. Most won't admit it though. If you think about it, even over-eaters have an eating disorder...it's called compulsive eating. So many people, myself included have used food destructively...they make it their enemy or use it to soothe stress. Thanks for commenting.
Date: 7/18/2004 7:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    HeyHeyPaula...yes, it is sad. I think a lot of people think of Karen when they think of anorexia. It's a shame she couldn't get the right help in time. Thanks for replying.
Date: 7/18/2004 8:00:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Lita...I guess we can refer to what they're doing with these sites with the old saying..."misery loves company." Maybe they feel by finding strength in numbers they can justify their cause?
Date: 7/18/2004 8:01:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    GotBubbles...exactly, we need others to encourage us to love ourselves and accept ourselves and to not continue our destructive habits.
Date: 7/18/2004 8:03:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    B.Monkey...congrats to stopping. It's a hard thing to do and even if some do, they tend to start up again when things get bad or they gain weight. It's a vicious cycle.
Date: 7/18/2004 8:05:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    CreepyFreak...you raise a good point, with the freedom of speech issue. They're arguing that right now since some of their sites have been deleted.
Date: 7/18/2004 8:06:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    LilLeppy...you're right, we really can't do much about it since they do have rights to have sites like these.
Date: 7/18/2004 8:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    NightScent...yes, it's sad and scary at the same time.
Date: 7/18/2004 8:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 30786    That sickens me totally. I had someone very close to me that had anorexia for years... it was a horrible experience that should not be encouraged to anyone. Where is the theory that we are beautiful from the inside? Kids are getting all the wrong messages
Date: 7/18/2004 8:50:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34487    Breezy...yes, kids are truly getting the wrong messages as are adults. Women are generally hit the hardest by these illnesses and it's no wonder with all the unrealistic expectations we view every day. Thanks for commenting.
