I climbed over the lichen choked steps to and knocked on the door. It creaked open, frail light flooding in for the first time in a century. I fully opened it and stepped forward into the Mausoleum. A staircase stood in the centre of the hall. Busts of famous family members were scattered around, and portraits of noble lords and ladies adorned the walls. Some forgotten god stood at the foot of the stairs, made of whitest marble. It wallowed in ironic pride as it flexed its muscles. I examined closer. It was unashamedly naked. I deeply stared into its deep eye-sockets. They were as black as the bottom of the ocean. Those hollow sockets chilled me to the bone, like a southern wind.
But my fascination with the statue was cut short, as I felt something brush past me. I span around like a Catherine Wheel, searching for the thing. Then I realized the darkness was closing in. The door slammed shut. I was trapped in utter night.
My heart sunk. Screams tore at me, unearthly noises diving at me like hawks to mice. I collapsed to my knees. The very fabric of my mind was shredding and dissolving. I screamed for mercy, even for death, but it did not come to me. The demonic power of Anaring Mausoleum had torn me from the physical universe to a new dimension of blind terror.
And with that my body slowly drifted into a void. Brimstone drifted into my nostrils, and laughter echoed through the darkness. A hundred, nay, a thousand hands tried to grab me as I sunk. I fell, faster and faster until my body was stretched like a rubber band. After an eternity, I hit the bottom of this void and felt my body smash like glass. Everything around me melted together like the palette of some failed artist.
And then there was complete silence.
I had, and still have no idea what happened. The time slid at a snail’s pace. I gathered my courage and struggled to my weakened feet, and stumbled out of that hell house. I was free from the shackles of Anaring Mausoleum’s purest fear, but I would never escape from its twisted reign of terror that held sway on my mind for all eternity.
