Woman Arrested and Jailed Over Hot Dog ~*KG*~

A Minnesota grocery store is being boycotted and is under fire for pressing charges and having a woman arrested and jailed because her 3-year-old child ate a hot dog. The woman, who has not yet been identified, was standing in line near a food table in a high traffic area of the store. The child reached over and grabbed a hot dog and ate it while the mother was conversing with an acquaintence. While the mother knew the child was next to her, she did not realize the child had eaten the $2.00 hot dog and the store clerk alerted security and had the woman charged with shoplifting because she proceeded to leave and did not pay for the hot dog after not realizing the child ate it. Local police arrived and arrested the mother.

The mother has since hired an attorney and is outraged that the store clerk and management did not even communicate to her that the child ate the hot dog or give her a chance to pay or even ask her for money. The mother stated that had she known her child had grabbed the hot dog she would gladly have paid for it. Store management claims it is the mother's duty to leash her child at all times but the mother contends leashing children is an individual choice. The mother has no previous record and the incident has spurred local outrage. The woman's lawyer expects the charges to be dropped due to the frivolous nature of the situation. The mother is considering suing the grocery store for lost wages due to the arrest and seeking damages and hopes to get an apology.

Date: 7/16/2004 2:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 46527    If the mother didn't turn to check that her child was still by her for the time it took the child to eat a hotdog then perhaps she should be charged with negligence!

Date: 7/16/2004 4:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 62249    But yea, thats ridiculous. They'll arrest a lady because their kid ate a hotdog but the business criminals roam the streets, free from justice. - MC Bacon

Date: 7/16/2004 4:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 62367    The mother was rather lax in watching her child but the store was equally irresponsible. They should have let her know at the checkout line that she owed them an extra $2.00. If she refused to pay for it then they would have every right to charge her with shop lifting. I think that the judge should make the lady pay the $2.00 and the store should pay the court costs.
Date: 7/16/2004 5:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    Kind of weird the kid could eat an entire hot dog without her knowing, he must have really crammed it down, but maybe she was happy he was being quiet! They should have told her and given her the chance to pay. Calling the police was silly.
Date: 7/16/2004 5:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 28193    LSR, and PCat are right. And another thing..you don't take hungry kids to the store!
Date: 7/16/2004 6:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    OMG!!! This is SO rediculous...I can't believe a store would be so petty and heartless. It's a kid...kids do things like that and it's impossible to watch them every second you're shopping even if they're in the cart. I know I'm guilty of my son eating something like a grape or apple when I wasn't looking. The produce guy was there for the apple and he said it was fine. I hope she gets some money from her suit with this idiotic store and management.
