I have many dear friends and family who send e-mail jokes and forwards. I always read them, sometimes they appeal to me in some way and I pass them on. Most of the time I delete them. But I've noticed a pattern that troubles me, and I feel compelled to share it here. I would never want to offend any of my e-mail friends or family members, but it has occured to me that it is ME who is getting offended.
I do not follow any particular religion. I do not call myself a "Democrat" or a "Republican". I don't discuss those particular topics in casual conversation, because it's impolite. So I am puzzled by the trend of Christian prayers, jokes about the Dixie Chicks and liberal-bashing content that I get. What is it about me that makes people think I appreciate these things or share their views?
I don't think it's funny to tell jokes about politics. It's pretty much a joke anyway. We are have been subjected to an administration that gained their power by manipulation and lies. Said administration has taken a vicious tragedy that befell our country and used it to serve their own agendas and feeds it to us on a daily 24 hour stream of "news". We are expected to be quietly governed by people who have been raised with so much wealth and prestige that they have no concept of how real people live. They will never have to worry about the cost of healthcare, of struggling just to pay the rent and the bills. They have taken the best part of our country, the people, the very heart of America, and turned us into desensitized consuming machines who propagate the corporate ideals that make them rich and the rest of us just bricks in their wall.
And the Christian content is usually a touching story or a prayer for the day, and then comes the guilt trip about making a choice to forward or delete, insinuating that if we delete, Jesus will cry. Well, I've got news. I know Jesus, I love Jesus and if he is crying, it's not because I didn't forward an e-mail. It's because God's children are killing each other in the streets of New York and on the sands of the Middle East and countless other places. It's because millions of people don't have food to eat or a roof to live under, yet we spend billions of dollars on war. It's because we are moving farther away from God's true word every day.
Peace. Love. Tolerance. Understanding. Happiness.
I'm tired of negativity and criticism. I'm weary of the constant nitpicking of the liberals by the conservatives and vice versa. We have big problems in this country, and instead of fighting each other we should put our time and resources into solving them. Argue if you want to with my views. I won't deny you that right. But I'm done putting any of my energy into reading your e-mails.
