Recently, the mother of a 16, 11, and 5 year old had her kids taken away and thrown in jail in my neighbor for "endangering" them. You see, she's a single mother of these kids and had to go to work so she left the 16 year old in charge of watching the younger ones. Someone had called Child Welfare on her for leaving her kids home and this resulted in them being taken from her and being put in jail. I think this is crazy. She was a wonderful mother to them, not to mention a single one who was making money for her family. Afterall, she left the 16 year old there to watch the younger ones. How is that any different from hiring a teenage babysitter? I know younger kids than that who have babysat around here.

Date: 7/15/2004 12:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 46091    I too was raised by a single mother and always had great care while she was at work. I'd have to agree with Becky... how responsible is the 16 yo and were the children in harm's way at the time?
Date: 7/15/2004 12:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 3648    That does make any sense to me....if she is a good mother, how can they put her in jail? She is trying to provide for her family by working..I see nothing wrong with a 16 year old babysitting 2 kids as long as the 16 year old is capable of doing so...There could be more to it then meets the eye though...What people see on the outside isn't always going on on the inside I guess.
Date: 7/15/2004 12:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 3648    opps meant doesn't...not does..
Date: 7/15/2004 12:24:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58334    No...I'm pretty sure that's it because I grew up with her kids and been to their house many times before and it couldn't be a more nicer place. She was always taking them to the movies and zoo when they were smaller and there has definately been no signs of any abuse. It's just for leaving them home unattended.
Date: 7/15/2004 12:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 3648    Hmmm unattended? But if the 16 year old is capable of watching the kids then there should not have been a problem. Unless of course Child Welfare felt the kids could be in harm's way..
Date: 7/15/2004 12:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 58334    The 16 year old is pretty responsible. He gets good grades in school and during the holidays he helps out a charities to raise money and get donations for poorer families. He's almost like the perfect child, in a way.
Date: 7/15/2004 12:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 26363    I don't see a problem. Over here a 14 yr old is legally able to babysit. She must be devastated! I wonder what their reason was for taking the children, surely they couldn't just take them when they were being looked after by someone responsible enough to do so.
Date: 7/15/2004 12:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 46091    I'm sorry if I seem doubtful... I have no first hand knowledge. If you believe in your friend, I would support her in her cause, and help make her case with children's services and get it atleast taken off her record.
Date: 7/15/2004 12:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 46091    Ooops... run-on... maybe I should stop yappin'. Best of luck to your friend.
Date: 7/15/2004 1:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 30747    If she was as good a mom as you say she was, and I have no reason to doubt you, then yes it is crazy. 16 is plenty old enough to be responsible. 12 year olds in my state can babysit for crying out loud. I was watching my 6 siblings when I was 13. I'm wondering who turned her in and for why. Seems like something is missing. I can see maybe, possibly having the kids taken away but jail time? Update this if you find out anything else.
Date: 7/15/2004 2:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 55386    My sister babysat me ever since she was 12. 16 is old enough to babysit 2 small children, and I really think it's stupid to have done that to the mother if she was providing for them well, and they were not in danger.
Date: 7/15/2004 3:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 23101    There is nothing wrong with this picture, I wonder why all of this even happened Nimiwae. It's kind of stupid. The babysitting age is 12, or 13 and 16 is plenty old enough to watch two sibs. How dumb. *Turdle Hugz*
Date: 7/15/2004 4:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 62552    That's ridiculous!!! I mean, most babysitters in the business, like what pretty muchly everybody already commented on, are under 16. Perhaps you should go and talk to the welfare centre or something like that, and find out who reported her in the first place. That's just insane.
Date: 7/15/2004 4:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 9509    I guess it would be different if the babysitter was hired, BUT in Missouri when a child is between the ages of 13 and 18 they can only watch the younger siblings for no more than 6 hours at a time. Although I think it's stupid since it's their own siblings. Poor woman! I'm going to pray for her and her children tonight.
Date: 7/15/2004 5:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 62146    are you sure their was not another reason why it happened. like I can see why it was stupid what she did I see nothing wrong with leaveing them home so long as the 16 year old was responsible enaf. perents leave children who are younger at home alone to take care of the house for weeks for busnes trips and stuff. maybe their was somthing else going on that you did not hear about.
Date: 7/15/2004 5:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 62675    That is ridiculous!! The one was 16!! I was babysitting at 11! She should get a good laywer -Sunni
Date: 7/15/2004 5:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 54968    That's wrong! I know some 13 year old babysitters around here!
Date: 7/15/2004 5:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 62634    I think the person who reported her should be in jail or at least the loony bin. -super sonic
Date: 7/15/2004 7:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 11240    This is a perfect example of a law whose intent, at least on the surface, never went beyond the mindset that laws can be used and interpreted, according to their wording, in a way thought totally unimanginable or even preposterous as to the original intent. Unfortunately, this family got caught up in a system that doesn't recognize flaws until someone like this is so adversely affected. God Bless.
Date: 7/15/2004 9:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 24003    That makes no sense at all. Seems like there is more to the story, if there isnt..then she was just done wrong.
