ECHOES IN THE NIGHT
Listen … I heard it again. A deep, groaning, bubble that seems to start and stop time and time again. I hear a rhythmic and monotonous gurgle that drones into the cool night air. There is an unfamiliar smell like dirty socks and stale tobacco. My bed seems to be tilted to one side, as if it were resting on a hillside. Weight shifts and covers move across my shoulders, and there … that noise. This time it seemed to be cut short, but only for an instant. Now a pungent breeze slaps the side of my face, like a baseball slamming into a catchers glove. A mixture of smoke and whiskey odors rise through my nostrils, changing the memory of pleasant dreams into thoughts of being eaten alive by a fire breathing drunk, that may have entered my home, and crawled into my bed. I raised my hand to block the pungent aroma of rotting teeth, then … more noise. The rasping sounds change momentarily to a smacking sound, like someone eating raw liver with their mouth open. Now the sound switches back to the gurgling. Each groan is as predictable as the last. Fear begins to pierce my mind. My heart pounds, and perspiration dampens my brow as I search my memory trying to recall where I have heard these echoes in the night. How it changed my life:This story started my writing.
