I often misspell words and don't put (sp) or (sic) by it. The reason is, beacuse I don't realize I do it. I've been out of highschool for eight years now. I've misspelled the words that I spell incorrectly for fifteen or so years. To me, the way I am spelling them IS correct. And yes, I realize that makes me appear uneducated. I can accept that. What really burns me, though, are the people who feel the need to point out misspelled words. WHY would someone do that? Are they trying to proove how smart THEY are? Do they think that by publicly humiliating someone they will further that persons education? Or is it simply okay to be rude to someone you see as less intelligent then yourself. (don't take personal offence to this B. Monkey. I've never noticed you correcting someone's spelling and I'm not aiming this at you. It just upsets ME.) |

When people shorten words to just letters or numbers I lose interest in reading it altogether. I cannot understand why someone wants to do that when it really bothers MOST people, and most of us just get tired of trying to cypher out what they mean. I do a LOT of basic typos, but they are strictly accidental but I do not try "shorthand" or that horrid SLANG. Wat=what,... Wud=would, ...2=to, too, two... U=you, ... UR=you're, your, ... R=are... well you get the picture, lol. GREAT post here, hope it gets results |

Most times when I spell something wrong I'm in a hurry because two other people use my computer so I'm always in a rush to get off so I don't have people yelling at me. Like today I'm in a rush because I have to go to work in like 5 minutes. I try to read what I'm writing a couple of times before I send it but sometimes I don't have time too. If I don't know how to spell a word I look in my handy dandy dictionary that is normal by my computer but today it isn't. I guess it doesn't like me anymore. Stands and applauds I totally agree with you. There are dictionaries for gods sake. All it takes is for a person to take five minutes before submiting the story and PROOF READ what you just typed, and FIX IT if it is not. *adjusts shirt* I have also noticed people use spell checker and then copy and paste what they wrote onto USM, but DO NOT even look at it to review what it put up for others to read.. when you use spell checker, USM format does not remove those annoying &8Mbg&* things from your sentences, you have to manually remove them by updating your post. *breathes in and exhales* I think I am going to be alright now, Lol... www.dictionary.com is our friend. Instead of taking the time to type (sp?) behind a word you're not sure of, look it up. It increases your writing vocabulary, which, in a text based mode of communication is *always* a good thing. A word used enough times usually gets committed to memory, and the (sp?) should never have to be used again |

The Only Thing I Absolutely Hate Is When People Do This Nonsense. Spelling Errors Happen And If Someone Is Unapologetic About Them.... (grr! I hate typing that way) Anyway, if they are unapologetic about the errors, good for them! English is not always the primary language of the people here and pointing out their mistakes is not nice, its rather arrogant. If someone was giving me grief over my writing I would ignore them or reply that it was none of their business. I don't think they should have to go to the dictionary everytime they are writing something, besides which, if they are truly a bad speller then going to the dictionary is not going to help. Have you ever tried to look up a word when you don't know how it is spelled, lots of options come up. |

Unfortunately in today's world less and less people are actually able to spell correctly by the time they leave education. First of all, I hate it when people put the "sp" next to a word that they think they've mispelled (which they generally have). If you know you don't have the spelling right, then do yourself the favor and look it up-- there are dictionaries aplenty on the internet and it takes less than a minute to track one down and look up a word. If that's too much for you, just think how it was years ago, when you had to get up and walk around your house to find the dictionary and then flip through it to find a word. Technology has eased the process for you. Besides, how are you going to ever learn to spell the word correctly if you don't look it up? Secondly, I don't expect people to be perfect (goodness knows, I'm not myself) but a post full of spelling errors is very distracting, makes the author look uneducated and therefore causes the readers to take them less seriously (whether the readers are conscious of it or not) and sometimes it gets to the point where it is very difficult to read. The whole point of having a standardized spelling system is so that people of all different ages and from different parts of the world can understand each other's writing. If you mispell often, then you are making it hard for people to understand you. And the silly thing is, that all you have to do is cut and paste your writing into a word processing program (available on most computers) and run a spell check on it to catch a majority of the errors. This all indicates to me that it's more a matter of laziness than ignorance. |
