Iowa traffic stop leads to multi-agency probe

BY KEVIN COLE

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Federal agents became involved Wednesday after a routine traffic stop on Interstate 80 east of Council Bluffs near the 16-mile marker raised the suspicion of an Iowa State Patrol trooper.

A man and a woman are in custody after troopers found what they called suspicious items in a sport utility vehicle, said FBI spokesman Jeff Tarpinian.

He wouldn't elaborate on what type of items were found, but Iowa's joint terrorism task force was called in to help investigate.

"First, they had a tough time identifying the male individual because he had more than one ID," Tarpinian said. "Then there were other items found in the vehicle that were suspicious. They detained those two individuals and contacted our office."

No charges had been filed by Wednesday night. Tarpinian said the man and woman were in the custody of the State Patrol at its Council Bluffs facility.

The terrorism task force was called to the scene after the eastbound SUV with California license plates was pulled over shortly after noon, Tarpinian said.

Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker said the Iowa fire marshal requested a bomb technician from his office to inspect a Ford Explorer after a trooper stopped the driver for speeding.

"Our guy didn't find anything," Danker said. "He was back in service shortly after 1 o'clock."

Danker said he was told that Omaha police bomb detection dogs also were called to the scene.

"They sniffed around, and it came up negative, I understand," said Danker.

Tarpinian said the investigation is continuing.

"I believe law enforcement officials will be able to make a determination in the next couple of days as to what we have here," he said.

Tarpinian said the Omaha office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Iowa Homeland Security office also were notified of the stop.

Date: 7/15/2004 10:12:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53961    And... California vehicles, especially vans, seem to be a target on I-80. I wonder why...?
