C.O.D.I.S ~ A good thing or a bad thing? ~*v*~ Angel Wolfe ~*v*~

CODIS generates investigative leads in crimes where biological evidence is recovered from the crime scene using two indexes: the forensic and offender indexes.

The Forensic Index contains DNA profiles from crime scene evidence.

The Offender Index contains DNA profiles of individuals convicted of sex offenses (and other violent crimes) with many states now expanding legislation to include other felonies.

Matches made among profiles in the Forensic Index can link crime scenes together; possibly identifying serial offenders. Based on a match, police in multiple jurisdictions can coordinate their respective investigations, and share the leads they developed independently. Matches made between the Forensic and Offender indexes provide investigators with the identity of the perpetrator(s). After CODIS identifies a potential match, qualified DNA analysts in the laboratories contact each other to validate or refute the match. * Taken from http://www.fbi.gov/hq/lab/codis/index1.htm *

I was watching Cold Case Files last evening, and they were talking about how this system helped find people behind murders and sexual assults, ect. I feel this is a Good thing, and should be used more in cases where police work is just not enough.

However, alot of people are afraid that if it is used, corrupt police officials or whoever can access personal information about you and keep tabs on your wereabouts, therefore, violating privacy. I can understand the fear of that, but I'm not sure if the people who are afraid of this happening, realize that they could be kept track of with or without the CODIS system. That's why there are stalkers and other crazy people out there (who might in turn be caught eventually with this system)

In my opinion, I feel that CODIS is a gift from the gods. without it, cases that had long since gone cold would never have been solved, and people who were behind the crimes would get away with whatever they have done. I think that CODIS is a good thing...

How about you?

Date: 7/14/2004 9:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 46091    A good thing against violent offenders... if it started including lesser crimes i.e. misdemeanors a great percentage of the american population would be "barcoded" in a sense and open to genetic profiles as well... just a thought... a paranoid conspiracy thought LOL.
