The blade’s handle quivered in the worn, dirty wood by my feet. He did not bother retrieving it, and I was too tired to try dislodging it from the floor.
“So, you have answered your own question. You’re dangerous, and also intelligent enough to know when to use your abilities, such as in the skirmish at the palace.”
“I’m still no use to you.” I painfully leaned back on the side of the bed.
An irrepressible smile tugged one corner of his face. “I will let you think that, Miss Allytai.”

“Most likely you will want some sleep. I’ll lengthen your rope for the night so you can use the bed. And I would not recommend trying anything sneaky, because even if you manage to untie this knot, by looking out the window you’ll find we’re more than five stories in the air, and lying just outside the door is me.” This time he did smile easily, but it did not reach the chill depths of his eyes.
The knot he touched here and there with the tips of his fingers and, as if by magic, a few more feet of rope was pulled loose.
“Sweet dreams, peeping tomboy,” he said.
The door closed with a near silent click.
