Stopping Medication

  Author:  36704  Category:(General Advice) Created:(7/10/2004 10:34:00 AM)

When you're not supposed to stop taking a medication completely but are supposed to gradually reduce the dose and wean yourself off, is that because of withdrawal that your body might go through? Are they just trying to make it easier on you and your body or does anyone know if their is another medical reason for it?

Date: 7/10/2004 10:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 26049    depends on the meds I guess
Date: 7/10/2004 11:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 15394    usually it is because there would be trauma in some way to your body... like you said withdrawl that physically could be harder if you stopped quick...
Date: 7/10/2004 11:07:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    so it is just the withdrawal you may go through
Date: 7/10/2004 11:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 15394    "Just the withdrawl" may mean increase or decrease in temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar... could affect the ability of the body to defend against illness, could mean stomache irritation, or spastic bowel... I believe I could go on but you get the point... "just" could be serious... just my two cents
Date: 7/10/2004 11:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 15394    PS add to that... the psychological impact of certain drugs... could be intense...
Date: 7/10/2004 11:44:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    being on this medication has a serious detrimental psychological impact on it's own, so I can't see the psychological side being any worse going off
Date: 7/10/2004 12:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 55251    I'm not quite sure. Maybe after awhile it could either stop having a effect on you, or it could do some serious damage. Like Jasmine said, I guess it depends on the medication your taking..Jung gave you great advice Take Care,
Date: 7/10/2004 1:34:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    I have side effects on it so side effects going off it can't be anyworse and stopping altogether is the only way to make the current side effects go away, decreasing the dose will just continue them
Date: 7/10/2004 3:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 3835    Do it as your doctor states, as they have seen numerous times where their advice has helped others in the past. Sometimes you have to decrease meds slowly, so as not to shock the body or the mind that has become dependant on it. To help cleanse it out of your system, take Milk Thistle Extract, comes in pills.. 1-3 a day for two or three weeks, cleans the body of all toxins and chemicals down to the cell level. Works best when taken with water.
Date: 7/10/2004 3:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    Base, make sure you go off slowly, especially if that is what your doctor tells you to do...I was on dilantin for two years with awful side-effects..once I began slowly going off of it, the side-effects lessoned a LOT..It took 6 weeks to go off and I gained 10 pounds in that six week time...anorexia was a side-effect I'd dealt with, so by just reducing the dose the side-effects went away...
Date: 7/10/2004 3:48:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    Thanks Kelly I just don't want to be on this medication and I disagree with the way the Dr. wants to handle it I think it's best if I just stop taking it altogether.
Date: 7/10/2004 8:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    There is a medical reason for it, because some drugs/medications can have some VERY serious adverse effects if you just stop cold turkey rather than weaning off (including cardiac arrest - yes, THAT serious). If you have been instructed by your doc to wean off of them- you NEED to wean off of them. Talk to your doc for the explanation for your specific meds.
Date: 7/11/2004 12:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 59876    be careful base. some medications like prednisone have very seriuous side effects and have to be decreased slowly. for instance, three people in the family have been on prednisone and in each case the medication was decreased slowly over six days because the side effects can be so severe. i'm sorry you are feeling bad
Date: 7/11/2004 8:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    Base, look up the medication on the internet. It should tell you why whatever you are on should be reduced slowly, or whether the slow reduction is needed at all.
Date: 7/11/2004 10:53:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 36704    thanks everyone
Date: 7/11/2004 7:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 29534    Here is a Website that I use most often to help out with medications: http://www.drugdigest.com/DD/DVH/Drugs/0,3912,,00.html. One of the main reasons they want you to wing you off is some can cause physical problems as well as psychological depending upon what it is. And some can cause withdrawal, depending what it is. I hope this will help some. *hugs*
Date: 7/12/2004 8:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    looking up or reading things is fine advice as well, but to eliminate any confusion you really should talk to the doc.
Date: 9/30/2004 2:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 35160    stopping a med abruptly can in some cases cause bodly harm. just depends on the med.
