Cats....Or Dogs???

Which Are Smarter, Cats or Dogs? by Martha Brockenbrough In the cartoon world, dogs and cats are natural enemies. In that two-dimensional universe, cats are smarter than dogs. And the humans all have three fingers and a thumb.

You can't use the cartoon world to determine which are smarter, cats or dogs. In my house, which is inhabited by two cats and a dog, I would have to say that the dog is the smarter creature.

Even though she sometimes tries to walk through doors that are only open a crack, therefore shutting them on her head, my dog clearly demonstrates her superior intelligence by following me everywhere I go and generally making me feel like the center of the universe. That's a smart thing to do because it guarantees many treats and lots of affection.

The cats pretty much ignore me except when they're hungry. The male cat has, however, trained my husband to let him out every morning at the brutal hour of 5 AM, which means the cat--at least in some ways--is smarter than my husband.

Keep Learning Find online classes and degree programs.I know my household is not a science lab. The intellectual pecking order we have established won't necessarily hold up against the rigors of scientific inquiry.

It's an important question, though, one that Cat People and Dog People have debated forever. If you're a Cat Person, you know that cats are smarter because they're independent and clean, and they have an uncanny sense of where they are and how to get home. If you're a Dog Person, you know that dogs are smarter because they're easier to train. In fact, dogs are so smart they sometimes even wear police badges and perform important jobs for people with disabilities, among other things.

Is one of our favorite pets smarter than the other? Can we finally put this question to rest? I think I have an answer. But we need to get a bunch of other stuff straight first.

(I chose to believe dogs are smarter than cats....)

Date: 7/10/2004 8:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 11251    My home is shared with four cats (one who acts like a dog) and a collie mix. Truthfully, I think it is pretty even on intelligence. Working in rescue, I have dealt with quite a few cats and dogs. Seems that quite a few we have rescued, have proven to be smarter than their owners, since the animal ended up running the house and eventually led to it being turned in for "behavioral problems". Anyway, that is a bit off topic, but I believe it is pretty even as I have stated before.
Date: 7/10/2004 8:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 53900    I think cats are smarter then dogs...(defenitely cuter too
Date: 7/10/2004 8:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 53900    If you think about it though cats dont really do much unless they have to...while dogs will continuously do the same thing over and over(like chasing after a ball or stick)
Date: 7/10/2004 8:41:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 48758    well I think dogs and cats are both cute..But I lean more towards the dogs...considering I have two of them at home one of which we rescued from death..
Date: 7/10/2004 9:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 62682    Cats are smarter than Dogs, they do what they want. A dog you can beat and a few minutes later the stupid dog will be right back saying, "ugg, love me, love me" and will be all over you. On the other hand, usually if you beat a cat, the cat is smart enough to leave or have nothing to do with ya, they know better!

But I've Yet To See A Cat Used In Assisting The Sightless, The Deaf, In Most Therapy...Assisting Others When They Are Epileptic..Or Have Any Other Time Of Seizures....Serving As An Assistant And Companion to A Soldier In The Military Service And Being K-9 Cops....I Love You Kitty Cats...But Dogs Rule!!...smiles...Great post!....T/C

Date: 7/10/2004 10:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 48250    Yea Dogs are a Lot like Precious Forgiving Children whom have been abused....they Love and Love in spite of their Unthinking, UnCaring Parent...Yet Dogs just as Precious Children have their Limits too...Eventually they will Go On...Leaving the Uncaring Heartless individual behimd.T/C
Date: 7/10/2004 12:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 49889    I think I'm a mixed breed- I love them both too much to decide. In my home we have 10 dogs and 23 cats....(sort of a pet farm, I guess) and I have definately noticed that they all have their own personalities, so I think saying cats are smarter or dogs are smarter is, in essence, the same as saying brunettes are smarter than red-heads. It just doesnt work that way. LOL
Date: 7/10/2004 1:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 54987    Dogs are definitely smarter, but I prefer cats for a variety of reasons; the main one being that you don't have to take cats for a walk, you can leave them for a couple of nights as long as you leave a feeder (automatic) full of food and a supply of water and fresh litter. Dogs are more likely to tear the place to bits and howl. I think the lack of thumbs is a huge handicap for all animals. They would certainly be more useful if they had thumbs... like bring me things, open the door for themselves, use a screwdriver and generally make themselves useful around the home... but no! If cats had the option of thumbs, they would turn it down.
Date: 7/10/2004 4:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 62782    H/B thats sad yet funny. Lol, I think they are even on intelligence. But I prefer cats though, they are soft and they are quiet. You let them out and they come back. They hunt for mice and other small animals [birds, squirrels]. They like to play with string and bells. My cat likes to steal other people's socks. They purr when you pet their tummies. Their breath smells like fish. They are small and can fit any where. They can jump on all kinds of things. They can climb trees, and they almost always land on thier feet when they fall. I like dogs and I'll take a stray in any time, but I love cats the most.
Date: 7/10/2004 5:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 52155    Dog tastes better with Barbeque sauce, but marinade some cat in A-1 steak sauce overnight and mmmmmm mmmmmm. It can't be beat.
Date: 7/12/2004 11:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 36537    Dogs are smarter, but dirtier.
Date: 7/12/2004 12:53:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 48758    Your missing the point...Some dogs are just as soft as some cats..Some dogs will sit and play with strings..My dogs do. And some breeds are so small they can fit almost anywhere. Like the yorkshire Terrier...
Date: 7/13/2004 1:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 62704    I think dogs are smarter because you can show them tricks and they learn quickly. ~Chely~
Date: 7/19/2004 8:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 62740    It has been scientificly(sp?) proven that cats are smarter than dogs. *MK*
Date: 7/20/2004 11:36:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 48758    Scientifically proven that cats are smarter than dogs??? How so??? What is it that makes them so smart? Oh by cleaning themselves?? To me i think they are just plain lazy...Not once have I seen a cat help out with the blind or help the firefighters or even help the police....
Date: 8/5/2004 7:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 62838    Well... that's a tough one. By nature groups of dogs in the wild will organise themselves into packs and live within groups where there are definite status relationships between each dog, and in domestic life a dog sees its owner as a kind of dominant member of the pack. Because of this they are known to show great loyalty and obedience. It is a part of their nature. Cats are very different though. In the wild they hunt by themselves rather than in packs and they spend much of their time roaming alone. In domestice life their natures remain the same. Going for a walk with a human or learning to obey commands are things that cats are most often not interested in. These things don't have as much meaning for them. Anyway my point is, that traits such as loyalty, obedience and ability to learn certain jobs do not necessarily reflect an accurate judgement of intelligence. There are many powers at work within the minds of each animal. - Kokoro
Date: 8/6/2004 1:01:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 48758    Ok..So maybe I under estimated the cats a just a little bit...I had a cat that jumped out our four story window and landed on all fours...on pure concrete...I thought that was pretty amazing..I guess cats and dogs are the same...
Date: 7/3/2005 3:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 16376    dogs! well I really don't know, lol.
