My home is shared with four cats (one who acts like a dog) and a collie mix. Truthfully, I think it is pretty even on intelligence. Working in rescue, I have dealt with quite a few cats and dogs. Seems that quite a few we have rescued, have proven to be smarter than their owners, since the animal ended up running the house and eventually led to it being turned in for "behavioral problems". Anyway, that is a bit off topic, but I believe it is pretty even as I have stated before. |

If you think about it though cats dont really do much unless they have to...while dogs will continuously do the same thing over and over(like chasing after a ball or stick) |

Cats are smarter than Dogs, they do what they want. A dog you can beat and a few minutes later the stupid dog will be right back saying, "ugg, love me, love me" and will be all over you. On the other hand, usually if you beat a cat, the cat is smart enough to leave or have nothing to do with ya, they know better!

I really Like Both Dogs And Cats and I Believe that they are both Intelligent in their Own Ways With their Unique and Special Personalities.. But I've Yet To See A Cat Used In Assisting The Sightless, The Deaf, In Most Therapy...Assisting Others When They Are Epileptic..Or Have Any Other Time Of Seizures....Serving As An Assistant And Companion to A Soldier In The Military Service And Being K-9 Cops....I Love You Kitty Cats...But Dogs Rule!!...smiles...Great post!....T/C |

Yea Dogs are a Lot like Precious Forgiving Children whom have been abused....they Love and Love in spite of their Unthinking, UnCaring Parent...Yet Dogs just as Precious Children have their Limits too...Eventually they will Go On...Leaving the Uncaring Heartless individual behimd.T/C |

I think I'm a mixed breed- I love them both too much to decide. In my home we have 10 dogs and 23 cats....(sort of a pet farm, I guess) and I have definately noticed that they all have their own personalities, so I think saying cats are smarter or dogs are smarter is, in essence, the same as saying brunettes are smarter than red-heads. It just doesnt work that way. LOL |

Dogs are definitely smarter, but I prefer cats for a variety of reasons; the main one being that you don't have to take cats for a walk, you can leave them for a couple of nights as long as you leave a feeder (automatic) full of food and a supply of water and fresh litter. Dogs are more likely to tear the place to bits and howl. I think the lack of thumbs is a huge handicap for all animals. They would certainly be more useful if they had thumbs... like bring me things, open the door for themselves, use a screwdriver and generally make themselves useful around the home... but no! If cats had the option of thumbs, they would turn it down. |

H/B thats sad yet funny. Lol, I think they are even on intelligence. But I prefer cats though, they are soft and they are quiet. You let them out and they come back. They hunt for mice and other small animals [birds, squirrels]. They like to play with string and bells. My cat likes to steal other people's socks. They purr when you pet their tummies. Their breath smells like fish. They are small and can fit any where. They can jump on all kinds of things. They can climb trees, and they almost always land on thier feet when they fall. I like dogs and I'll take a stray in any time, but I love cats the most. |

Your missing the point...Some dogs are just as soft as some cats..Some dogs will sit and play with strings..My dogs do. And some breeds are so small they can fit almost anywhere. Like the yorkshire Terrier... |

I think dogs are smarter because you can show them tricks and they learn quickly. ~Chely~ |

Scientifically proven that cats are smarter than dogs??? How so??? What is it that makes them so smart? Oh by cleaning themselves?? To me i think they are just plain lazy...Not once have I seen a cat help out with the blind or help the firefighters or even help the police.... |

Well... that's a tough one. By nature groups of dogs in the wild will organise themselves into packs and live within groups where there are definite status relationships between each dog, and in domestic life a dog sees its owner as a kind of dominant member of the pack. Because of this they are known to show great loyalty and obedience. It is a part of their nature. Cats are very different though. In the wild they hunt by themselves rather than in packs and they spend much of their time roaming alone. In domestice life their natures remain the same. Going for a walk with a human or learning to obey commands are things that cats are most often not interested in. These things don't have as much meaning for them. Anyway my point is, that traits such as loyalty, obedience and ability to learn certain jobs do not necessarily reflect an accurate judgement of intelligence. There are many powers at work within the minds of each animal. - Kokoro |

Ok..So maybe I under estimated the cats a just a little bit...I had a cat that jumped out our four story window and landed on all fours...on pure concrete...I thought that was pretty amazing..I guess cats and dogs are the same... |
