It seems to me alot of USM'ers have having computer troubles with adware, spyware, viruses, and other such things. Well I have some advice for you.
First off, make sure, if you have Windows XP, you go to microsoft.com and download all the windows updates (or the critical ones, at least, some of the others are obsolete). You can either get them from microsoft.com or by clicking (on the internet explorer menu) Tools > Windows Update. They help alot when it comes to pc security
Adware and Spyware: Go to one of the following sites (www.download.com www.lavasoft.de www.lavasoft.nu) and search for (if download.com) and download/install something Called Ad-Aware. It works wonders in getting rid of Ad-ware/Spyware. Another tool you should have is called spybot: search and destroy. This can be found on download.com , as can the next product, which is called Spyware Blaster. All the products named in this paragraph are free. (Note: make sure to download updates for these products regularly!)
Viruses. You definatly NEED a virus scanner. I recommend Norton Antivirus, but it costs money... it's worth it though, I feel it's one of the better scanners out there. There are a couple free ones, such as AVG and whatnot (you can find them on download.com). Again, make sure to download the definitions.
Misc. To help reduce ad-ware and spyware and other evil things from being downloaded onto your hard drive, on the internet explorer menu, click Tool > Internet Options. Go tot he secuirty Tab and fool aorund with the settings, I would suggest you put them as high as they can be, but beware, if the are this high you won't be able to do alot of internet activity (safety first right?) Well if you go on a trusted website you can lower the security settings, and them put them back when you leave, or, if you wish, you can put the trsuted site under "trused sites" and set the security for trused sites seperatly. The go to the Privacy tab and do the same thing.
I think I've addressed the most troublesome issues to USMers
