Date: 7/8/2004 4:47:00 PM From Authorid: 62675 I had a shepard mixed with collie and huskie and he was so protective. He would scare off birds and when I was left home alone as a teenager he never left my side and slept outside of my bedroom until my dad got home, even though it was upstairs and he had srthritis. -Sunni |

Date: 7/8/2004 4:51:00 PM From Authorid: 50434 You should try looking up and researching different types of dogs. Also before getting a dog please try to get a dog from and animal shelter, the dogs there will go through sessions to make sure they are adoptable and whether or not they would be suitable with children. |
Date: 7/8/2004 4:57:00 PM From Authorid: 53284 Labs and Goldens are both great dogs. What I think is most important is the disposition of the dog. There are some canine personality tests that you can give to a puppy that will help determine the personality of the puppy before you purchase one. You'll have to search on line for those. The other thing, is I'd want to meet the parents of the puppy that you consider purchasing. We bread dogs for some time, and personality/disposition to a certain extent are inherited from the parents. So you want the parents to be friendly and nice to kids. I don't know how old your son is, but more than likely, you'll be the one caring for the dog. Don't expect a child to learn responsibility by having an animal. |
Date: 7/8/2004 4:57:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 40509 Thanks you guys! Are the Newfs the same kind of dog as Beethovon (sp)? I don't know much about dogs, but, my son loves them. |
Date: 7/8/2004 4:59:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 40509 No, WildBob, my son is only 8 months, but I think it would be nice for him to have a dog as a companion and for protection. I also want one for not only him, but myself as well. |
Date: 7/8/2004 4:59:00 PM From Authorid: 62675 Beetoven (cant spell lol) is a St Bernard. They are very similar. Newfs are black, black and white, or black and brown. They have longer hair and are as big if not bigger then St.s. -Sunni |

Date: 7/8/2004 5:06:00 PM From Authorid: 43592 I grew up with a mut. It was mix fo a collie, husky, german shepard and something else that were weren't quite sure of. He was the best dog I've ever seen. I'd get a mut. |
Date: 7/8/2004 5:08:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 40509 Afro, that reminds me of my friends dog. They rescued him when he was a baby from starvation, and he has been the most loyal, smart dog to them. I guess payback for saving him! |
Date: 7/8/2004 5:11:00 PM From Authorid: 59876 probably a lab or golden retriever as they tend to be very gentle yet protective. we have rotties. my son just loves them, but being only three, he can be a bit harsh at them as well and must be watched closely. if your son is only eight months, you might want to wait awhile as there will be hitting and tail pulling, and a puppy being trained might not understand that. |
Date: 7/8/2004 5:12:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 40509 Your very right Dohency, thanks for considering that because it hasn't crossed my mind. That makes me want to wait a while. |
Date: 7/8/2004 5:19:00 PM From Authorid: 62104 I would say a lab also. That's what we wanted but then we actually now have a jack russle- a gift to my kids from my mom, she's pretty good also but any puppy can be rather fiesty just because they're pups and want to play, chew etc |
Date: 7/8/2004 5:22:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 40509 I have to wait until I move out of my apartment anyway, I don't have a yard for one to run in here |
Date: 7/8/2004 5:23:00 PM From Authorid: 49132 I would say a sheltie (shetland sheepdog.) Its a minature version of lassie |
Date: 7/8/2004 5:44:00 PM From Authorid: 57579 Shelties are great dogs we have a sheltie corgi mix |
Date: 7/8/2004 5:58:00 PM From Authorid: 62728 I grew up with a lab and loved every minute of it. Mom and Dad already had one when I was born and she would lie on my blanket with me when I was an infant and watch over me curled up right beside me (my folks have pics). Mom said when people entered the room she would watch them like a hawk and if she didn't like they way they moved toward me she'd growl at them. She died when I was about 4 though so we replaced her with another lab and she lived until I was a freshman in college. |

Date: 7/8/2004 8:44:00 PM From Authorid: 54987 A stuffed dog... a toy dog. It's a pity we couldn't turn the question around and ask what kind of child would be ideal for a dog. Okay... if you twist my arm I'd have to say..... hotdog. |
Date: 7/8/2004 10:04:00 PM From Authorid: 48250 LOL @ Koolade..Or ya could get one of those dog alarms that sounds like a German Shepherd..... |
Date: 7/8/2004 10:34:00 PM From Authorid: 53558 Labs are very nice dogs. |
Date: 7/9/2004 5:35:00 AM From Authorid: 15228 We got a lab which we thought would be perfect for our daughter...the dog couldn't stand her! We have a Great Pryenese now and the dog just loves my little girl, she is barking at her right now because she isn't paying attention to her. I think an animal that is rescued from a shelter would be a good idea. |
Date: 7/9/2004 5:39:00 AM From Authorid: 10245 Golden Retreivers are the very best, IMO. They're loyal, protective, gentle and very much a family dog, if you've got the room for a big guy Mine was the best... he always sat with the kids when they were outside, positioned between them and the gate.... always on watch. He was the most gentle dog I've ever met, yet I never worried about being protected if it came down to it. He knew not to play rough with the kids... he loved to play tug, and really got into growling and acting a tough guy if there was an adult on the other end of his sock, but his entire demeanor towards the game changed when a child was tugging on the other end. He always let the kids win. |
Date: 7/9/2004 5:40:00 AM From Authorid: 10245 Labs are good, but they tend to be more high strug until their a little older sometimes. that's another thing about the golden... they're pretty mellow |
Date: 7/9/2004 11:40:00 AM From Authorid: 26363 labs are generally considered the most tempermental of dogs although I am sure you would find that most mixed breeds are just as nice. Go to the pound and talk with a placement officer there. I am sure they will advise you well in which dog(s) or pups)available are best to adopt. Whatever your decision, just be sure to consider the needs of the type of dog you do get. Good luck! |
Date: 7/9/2004 7:38:00 PM From Authorid: 19460 we have a lab/blue healer mix. he loves the kids to death. every lab we have had were good dogs. also redbone hound is a good natured dog to have. |
Date: 7/10/2004 1:33:00 PM From Authorid: 54987 Froggy Baby took the dog right out of my mouth...urrghhh. Yes! A blue heeler...they are notorious for not eating kids... in fact they are very very gentle... and intelligent. |
Date: 7/27/2004 11:13:00 AM From Authorid: 25390 Border Collie's are very sweet, as well as labs and golden retrievers. I have a collie/lab mix and he is the sweetest thing on earth. He is still a little feisty as he is a puppy, but he loves my 8 month old son. They are only weeks apart in age too. |
