KLINE-LEVINE SYNDROME....OH such a catchy little title for such a horrendous illness...PammieRose

My son developed Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS) around 15 years ago and still has it even at 30 years old.

This is an illness that creates what we refer to as "sleeping Episodes". He will go to sleep and literally sleep anywhere from 3 to 17 days, only waking to eat or go to the restroom. Once he does become fully awake again, he has no memory of anything that took place during the episode and feels just fine.

This illness is so rare that when he was finally diagnosed, there were only 22 known case in the USA. It primarily appears in young My son developed Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS) around 15 years ago and still has it even at 30 years old.

This is an illness that creates what we refer to as "sleeping Episodes". He will go to sleep and literally sleep anywhere from 3 to 17 days, only waking to eat or go to the restroom. I almost lost it during the 17-day episode, I didn't believe he would ever wake up again. Once he does become fully awake again, he has no memory of anything that took place during the episode and feels just fine.

This illness is so rare that when he was finally diagnosed, there were only 22 known case in the USA.

Along with the excessive sleeping, he also experiences vast cravings for sugar or sugar filled products, and he experiences varying psychological abnormalities. Of course these things take place only during a sleep episode.

Finding a diagnosis was a nightmare, because KLS is so rare. It took us eight months and during that time, I was told he was demon possessed and that he "probably" had multi personalities developing. Ludicrous and of course, none of that was the case.

He had to be placed in a mental hospital because we had no idea what we were dealing with, but it seemed psychological with all the sleeping. While there, his psychiatrist told me that he was just too normal when he was awake for this to be a mental illness and asked if she could take him to a neurologist that she knew in Orlando, Florida. Of course, I agreed.

My son's names is Shane and upon his visit to the neurologist, the doctor had received his first ever information on KLS four days prior to Shane's visit and was able to diagnose him immediately. What a relief..knowing is truly half the battler...I assure you.

The prognosis for this illness is that is is suppose to dissipate as mysteriously as it appeared by the time Shane turns 30. Well he is 30 now..this past October and he still has it I am sad to say.

Of interest, Shane and I have been in the newspapes twice and on tv once because of the rarity of his illness.

Fortunately Shane's job understands and allows him time off when a sleeping episode occurs. It primarily appears in adolescent boys around 14-15 years old, but there have been a few cases involving girls.

Why am I telling you all of this? Well with it being so rare, you just never know when someone else may be struggling with no clue.

OH one more point of interest. The doctors believe it is of a viral nature, but not contagious. They believe it is long acting virus that lays dormat in the nervous system and only rears it's ugly little head when the body's immune system is down. I tend to agree, because I know when Shane gets sick or very stressed, it will and does attack. And it's not heriditary either.

Hugs, PammieRose

How it changed my life:

I think this is pretty much self-explanatory.

What really scares me is that it is even more rare for it to last this long and the ones they have been able to study, one man died and he was in his 30's..so I do hope it ends very soon. Hugs,

Oh it was something, when I had that counselor tell me he was demon possessed and asked me if he growled or if his eyes turned red..I almost went of the deep end. Hugs Sis,
Date: 7/8/2004 5:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 62104    That is amazing. I have never heard of this and would love to know more. I'm just sorry this had to happen to your son.
Date: 7/8/2004 5:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 62104    PS. does he require special care when these epposides come on? Can he look after himself when he wakes to eat and go to the bathroom...is he consious at the time or not?
Date: 7/8/2004 7:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    this sounds really frightening. Does he go into REM sleep? Does he dream? Poor guy. Sorry that his medical condition was mis-diagnosed as demonic possession
Date: 7/9/2004 6:36:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 29928    Blue Heaven, when he does wake during an episode, it would be the same as if someone woke you up at 3am and you had to function..he isn't very coherent at all and never remembers any of it. He does have to be watched during an episode. He will try to drive and there is NO way he can do that, so his keys have to be hidden. I remember one time, on one day, every time he woke up, he thought it was morning and took a shower..three in one day..LOL. Hey Cathy, I don't know if he dreams or not. I have asked, but since because he has no memory of anything that takes place during an episode, he doesn't know either. The strange thing is, he is very reluctant to talk about anything that occurs during one. As a result of a newpaper article, we made contact with another man with KLS, but Shane wouldn't even talk to him. That part, I don't understand at all. HUGS,
Date: 7/12/2004 3:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    my goodness Pammie, I've never heard of this before, and it must be very hard for you all, and hopefully Shane will get well real soon....hugs hun
Date: 7/12/2004 7:48:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 29928    Zema hunnie! Thanks for your comment..we all hope so too. Poor thing. I saw him last night and he was telling me about planning to go to six flags the end of this week. He is off all week and had anted to got to Florida, but every single time he goes to Florida on vacation he goes to sleep..it never fails, so he canceled all that. I feel so bad for him, he just canNOT live a normal life
We have discovered that good stress as well as bad stress will trigger an episode....and it's jut not worth it to him, to go and take the chance. He has lost so much time and experiences because of this thing! Much Love,

Date: 7/12/2004 9:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 13119    the only other person I heard of having this was a female, her life was ruined until they figured it out. You and your son are very brave to continue on when you didn't have his diagnoses.
