this is the first of the two-part ending. i'd suggest if you're reading this now, read the last part, part 20, as soon as you finish.
At midnight she woke up. She didn't know why she woke up, but she did. She tried going back to sleep without tossing and turning too much, she was still lying on him. It was impossible. Without realizing it she slammed her head on his chest in defeat. He stirred a little bit then opened his eyes. He watched her look up at him. She gave him a short kiss and told him to go back to sleep. He did as told, allowing her to get up to take "a short walk."
She walked around the corner of the dugout and over the swings. She swung back and forth contemplating her future, asking Lilith how it turned out. Lilith finally appeared, telling her only how her life would end. She was unable to tell any more than that, not only was it too hazy, but Lilith knew where her life ended. Ironically it was on the swingset with a sharp pain of a knife to her throat. She asked who her murderer would be, and Lilith couldn't tell her. This angered her, and on top of her depressed state she began to realize there was nothing left. That's why Lilith couldn't tell her.
She ran back to the dugout, she would beat her murderer to the crime. She grabbed his pocketknife and kissed him once more, one last joy before it all disappeared. She raged back to the swings, swung once more remembering her childhood, drifting through her memories. Then she opened the knife, and in one swift motion, sliced her neck.
Her last kiss had awoken him, he shot upright realizing she was still gone. "Time has run out, my friend. And with the time, so has your reason. You have 10 seconds with her before she's lost forever." Shax talked to him through his mind. She would be gone soon, his time was short. He ran to the swings, and as the nightmare that had haunted his mind too long showed, she was fallen off the swing. His eyes were distracted by the blood, his eyes welled with tears.
He came down to her, whispering in her ear "the Dark Carnival will lead you, do not be afraid of death." Then he kissed her one last time, took his own knife with her blood still on it, and watched her eyes flutter then glaze over with the look of death before they disappeared behind her eyelids. The wind picked up, and the chill send throughout his body was haunting. The Carnival was near.
He took his knife and swiftly slain his own throat, then with his last gasping breath he stabbed his chest, straight into his heart. He staggered and fell. He was dead, matching his reason to live beside him.
