I think EVERONE should be able to reproduce as long as they are able to look after there child. Some of the better parents are not the doctors and lawyers of society but those who are a little bit slow in there methods. If we stop people from reproducing then we are no better than Hitler or Stalin. IMHO.  |

They used to sterilize people with low IQs in Canada and then they had a functioning handicapped lady sue them for it. It is a basic human right to have the ability to reproduce. I personally don't think that someone who is still in diapers should be having someone else in diapers but that is my opinion. I do know that it is against the law to sterilize them without consent.  |

This is a good debate topic. I can basically debate myself about this. On one hand my answer is no. If they cannot be functioning parents then they should not have kids. On the other hand who is to say who can and cannot be functioning paretns? I know plenty of normal IQ'd people who should not breed!! Then you have the cute stories of the down syndrome couple getting married. I think with Down syndrome they can't have kids though. I know I am not the best parent but it is my right to choose if I want to have a kid as it should be theirs. But in the case of rape you have to look at the whole situation, why do her parents have to raise it why can't she abort it? She obviously didn't want the child or would be able to be a good parent since she can't even name who did it to her. I guess what my point is if you have the right mind to decide you want a baby, you should have the right to do so. I may not agree with it, but the right should be there. I don't think they should have babies cause first of all in 5th grade I knew some m.r people and sometimes they just hurt people. Even if it's a simple slap which is what they did to me, what if they did it to the kid? Babies have not as much like body protection and it could seriously hurt them. Also it's a huge responsibility to care for a child but I don't know that yet be cause I'm only 12. I also heard that if the parents has a disease the kid is 70% likely to get it and that's a huge risk. So in my opinion they shouldn't have kids-Shorty8  |

Okay - start this over. I did group the children togetehr that i worked with. I say work with because thats what I do. I do everything that I can to place them into the proper learning environment. SOmetimes it works, sometimes it does not. If anything I spend a lot of time talking to these kids. My favorite kids are the one's who know that they need help. I love these kids, and it almost killed me when I heard about one of my kiddo's that got pregnant. She doesn't udnerstand at all. I can't see how someone can just take advantage of a child, but someone did, and should someone be blammed? I don't know!!! I just pray that these kids make it through summers, and that they can become the best they can. I would not be working with these kids if I didn't love them. It really hurt my feelings when Base said that I thought they were beneath me, because that is so wrong! I never have felt that way, and I never will. Most MR children are the nicest, sweetest children you will ever meet. I hate to see them feel pain, or get hurt by someone. I want to strangle children that make fun of them. Some of these kids call thier teachers momma, and some of the kids would rather be at school than anywhere else. I am sorry if I offended anyone. I have heard teachers discuss this, and I thought we could discuss it here. I haven't met anyone here at Unsolved Mysteries that I don't like, I didn't want to hurt anyone, and I apologize if I did. I am not a cruel person. I don't like to fight. I do however, like to talk about things, because usually I see something one way, and after talking to someone, I see it a completely different way. i work with people that have developmental disabilities. they have more rights than you and i . trust me, my job pounds it into our brains. but most people with developemental disabilites want the same thing as you and i. they want jobs and homes and families. its sad that some1 would take advantage of somebody with DD but it happens, all to often. my job tries to help our clients learn how to tell the differance from the right way and wrong way some1 should touch you. but back to the point, yes they should be able to have kids, and i think its absolutely disgusting that the thought of sterilizing people is even thought of by some people. i dont care whats wrong with any person, no1 should be sterilized cause of something they cant control.  |

I do consider what I do working with these children. I work with them because I try to find out what they want to do in the future. Some students want to be teachers, some want to be sackers at a grocery store. Some of the students don't want to do anything but sleep, eat, and play video games. All these kids are different, and they are on different levels. I just listen, and play games with them, that will help determine what skills they have, and what classes they would do best in. You don't want to put a child who can't spell into a creative writing class. You don't want to put a child who can't walk in track! We try to let the kids decide, and we talk to them about what they want. Lizard-1 |

haven't seen anyone address this point, so I'll say it-- I.Q. may be a deceptive measure of intelligence. For one thing, they only test certain types of intelligence. There is a language bias built into the test so that minorities and ESL speakers are classified as slow and sent into special education classes at a disproportionate rate. And then there are sheer flukes-- like, I heard of a man who scored somewhere around 70 on the test, and they wanted to place in a school for mentally disabled, but his parents made a stink so they were forced to keep him in regular school. The guy had learning disabilities, but with some hard work he made it into college and ending up getting a PhD in-- theoretical math! Yeah, so the test isn't thoroughly reliable and-- I feel that IQ tests have been grossly misused, as in this case. IQ tests were created to identify kids with special education needs, not to take away people's rights or create an elite group of people.  |

I work with "Intellectually Challenged" people. I think that those who would not understand or be able to responsabliy care for a child should ntot be allowed to have children just for the sake of the child well-being. i am on both sides of the coin... i have worked with handycapped people in group homes one side says no they shouldnt be able to have children because they physically and mentally cannot take care of a child because they cannot funtion on thier own how are they to parent... but i also dont agree with sterilizaion because sometimes they can function enough to get out of the group home and be able to be on thier own(function day by day) with little help and the goverment would not know this until they are older... so it isnt right to cut off thier chances to have children... this is also one of the main reasons why they rarely higher men to work in group homes.. it's not that women are more "motherly" it's incidents where men have taken advantage of handycapped people  |

My niece is low IQ (fetal alcohol syndrome) and was raped by a kid at school. They didn't find out until she kept getting sick and her mom took her to the ER and they suggested a pregnancy test. They decided to have an abortion. That part bothered me as my sister had adopted my niece because she couldn't get pregnant. I would have thought she would have loved to help raise a baby from the start, since she couldn't have one herself. This is a tough subject. I think each case has to be looked at individually. Many people with disabilities would probably take better care of their children than some "normal" (for lack of a better word) people do. BTW, my sister put her on birth control...  |

I don't think that reproduction should be a right--that is, a privilege granted to everyone. Because of the incredible responsibilities that can accompany reproduction, only those that are mature enough for those added responsibilities should be allowed to reproduce. People are able to drive long before they are judged mature enough to do so; the potential for having a child is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. A 15-year-old girl that wears diapers and is without understanding should not be placed in the role of parent. I suggest that the parents order an investigation into the rape of their daughter. DNA samples will confirm the identity of the father.  |

those with ADD and ADHD can do just fine i know people with ADD they are fine to do what ever i have no idea who ODD is so can you fill me in on that one? Well when I saw the title I asumed you have seen the movie "I am sam" some retarted guy end up haveing his 6 year old taken away and it turns out he was a better perents than the people they tryed to give her to the girl was smart to (I guess because she was not so dependent on her perents). I am not sure how close to relity that story is. if they can function in socity then their is a chance they can have kids. But as for the people that can bearly tie their shoes maybe not. it would have to depend on how serious their condition is.  |

My niece is not retarded, she has cerebral paulsey, and she is a little slow, and in a wheelchair, and wears diapers at 15. I couldn't immagine someone deciding for her that she shouldn't have children just because she is a different.  |

if they aren't able to function normally for the most part, i dont think its a good idea for them to have kids but i dont necisarrily think that they should be made sterile, thats kinda mean in a way. i dunno  |

There are many dangers to sterilization. It is invasive and unnecessary. Also there is a great difference between low iq and mental retardation. Most people in this country never attain a reading level higher than age 11. Most people have iqs lower than 100. Forceful sterilization was a nazi idea. There are methods of contraception that can be used. A lot of our great men and women came from parents of lower iq and some of us ordinary folks too. And what would be the cutoff point on the scale? We can't all be nuclear physicists.  |

They should be sterilized. I also think that they should put birth control in the water and people should have to apply to have a kid. If they don't, they should be hit with massive amounts of taxes.
