However, my memory has survived me well over the last few years. Painful memories but much needed. Memories have come back of what occurred slightly. I remember stopping to look both ways and stepping out slightly into the cross walk. There was one car on the highway, and it was turning onto my side road (the part of the highway is a 3 mile straight away). However, there was one problem. According to recent memories I have gotten over the years there was one thing missing. No one ever thought of the entrance ramp to the highway (about half a mile farther down). According to my memory, a car came speeding onto the highway as I began to cross. Kiera was behind me due to the fact I like to make a run instead of walk to be safe. As I crossed I heard Kiera scream something but never knew what. Only my feelings can tell me now, that possibly this is it.
Over the last few years I have gotten use to everything. Due to damage in my leg I lose feeling every now and then. Due to damage that is “unknown” I lost eyesight in one eye over that year, to the point I can’t even see the E on the eye chart. But psychical damages heal, or we learn to deal with them. We learn to get use to losing the feeling in a leg, or not being able to see out of one eye. Our body compensates for it and helps us in other ways. Our memory helps us to not remember details sometimes. But sometimes despite the fact we can have ways to bring it back. Pain heals, time changes, however memories eat at the soul forever.
I’ve crossed the highway once since then, and as I got to the other side I broke down crying. I haven’t crossed it since. Many accidents have occurred there. Even before me. Two others I had heard got hit on that highway, as did one of my friend’s dogs. And for me, it shall ever be “The highway of fear”, because whenever I walk there fear strikes me. It’s a feeling of cold, a feeling of being powerless in which I never want to feel again.
So Readers beware. If you ever come to New York, and happen to go on a highway called Route 9W watch how you drive. Accidents happen, and that road to me is “the highway of fear”.
