Puppy Mills and Why You Should Adopt Your Dog From A Shelter

Until recently, I had never heard of a Puppy Mill, or Puppy Farm. I've been doing research on it and am absolutely horrified by the conditions of many of these. I asked some friends and family and they had never heard of a Puppy Mill either, so I thought maybe I should share some information here with all of you.

This information came from: http://www.helpinganimals.com/i-pmills.html

"Most puppies sold in stores come from breeding "farms" called "puppy mills," where mother dogs and "studs" spend lonely lives in small filthy cages, producing litter after litter.

Recently, PETA found dogs at one puppy mill living on hard wire with no bedding, little protection from the searing hot summers or the frigid winters, and little to no veterinary care. Crusted, oozing eyes, raging ear infections, mange that turned skin into a mass of red scabs, abscessed feet from the unforgiving wire floors—all were ignored or inadequately treated. Some dogs injured their feet by catching them in the wire of their cages, and they hobbled painfully around their small space, trying to keep their balance. The collar on one Labrador retriever had not been adjusted as the dog grew and had become embedded in his flesh. Even though the gangrenous skin fell away as the collar was removed, his neck was treated with nothing but a worm-repellant spray.

Timid dogs were terrorized by their more aggressive cagemates, who often prevented them from eating and drinking. Sadly, many of the old mother dogs had gone mad from confinement and loneliness. They circled frantically in their small cages and paced ceaselessly back and forth—their only way of coping with their despair.

These conditions are typical at hundreds of puppy mills across the country. Laws offer little protection and are poorly enforced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

While puppy mills are churning out litters, millions of unwanted dogs are dying in pounds and shelters. If everyone who wanted a companion dog were to adopt from a shelter instead of buying from a pet store, tens of thousands of dogs would be spared and the puppy mills would go out of business—preventing thousands more breeding dogs from enduring lonely, miserable lives."

It is very, very sad. I wish I could put a stop to it. :(

Date: 6/9/2004 5:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 62675    This is all true. However, not all breeders treat their animals like this. I beleive in adopting from shelters, but I want a specific breed and they are rarely at shelters. If people do decide to buy from a breeder and they are reputable, they will have no problem with you coming over and meeting the parents too. I will never buy from a pet store either, because they do not check the breeders they buy from only buy the cheapest animals. This is not only true for dogs but all the other animals reptiles, hamsters, birds. WE bought our two birds from a pet store, I will never do it again. There is a shelter for parrots, where plenty of parrots need a good forever home. I am actually going to start volunteering there soon. This is a good post because not a lot of people know where pet stores get their animals from! -Sunni818
Date: 6/9/2004 5:37:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11348    You're right Sunni, not all breeders are like this. However, there are so many of them in the United States that do mistreat their animals, that this is something I think people should be aware of. Some breeders in these puppy mills also will kill any runt litters or any sick animals, rather than just taking the sick to the vet. Some of the caged mothers are kept in such shallow cages that they cannot stand up to their full height. It is so sad, and I don't understand how it can be going on at all. These things should be checked out much more thoroughly.
Date: 6/9/2004 6:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 62624    Yes, I've looked at these sites before. It is absolutely horrid how some of these animals are treated. One site I saw didn't even remove the dead carcasses from the cages and the live ones had to live with the dead ones. It makes me cry when I see images of these. Some people are just SO cruel. But I agree with Sunni818. Sometimes, there is a specific breed of dogs that I want and I can't find them in shelters. Now, both of my cats come from shelters...but not my dogs. Great post!!! Date: 6/9/2004 6:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 11251    Don't Breed or buy while Homless Pets Die! There are many pure breed rescues out there for any breed imaginable and many will adopt out of state if you are willing to take that extra mile. Reputable breeders are VERY few and far between. ***stepping off soap box before I say too much*** (It's the rescue worker in me)
Date: 6/9/2004 7:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    Before I knew what a puppy mill was I bought a dog from one, about 14 years ago. We found an ad in the paper advertising scottish terriers..we drove almost two hours to the place out in the middle of no-where. It was a trailor and behind it were kennels upon kennels stacked on top of each other with just a tarp covering them. This was in the middle of winter in Colorado. All breeds of dogs were in those kennels. The puppies, dozens of them, were kept in a small, heated shed. I got my puppy which turned out to be a wonderful dog. But I would never, ever buy from one of those places again. I think about the life those poor dogs live, doing nothing but giving birth and probably killed when they out live their usefulness. I got my new dog from a rescue society..she was suppose to be put to sleep at the local pound, but the vet tech couldn't do it, so she called the rescue society for that particular breed.
Date: 6/9/2004 8:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 62503    i hate this... my dog is my life.. and sometimes things like that make me want to buy from there just to take them from suck a miserable place to the loving home I provide.. I adore my dog and to think that someone could treat puppies so cruel is just insane to me... my dog sleeps on my bed and she is just spoiled and i wish all dogs could be spoiled
Date: 6/9/2004 9:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 36901    The relationship between my dog and I is very much like what bleeding_juliet described. I recently came across a website that was talking about puppy mills and encouraging people to try and put a stop to them. It's beyond sad that this is allowed to go on. I hope something will be done.
Date: 6/9/2004 10:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 55789    That is just horrible! It gets me that people would actually do this to an animal.

Date: 6/9/2004 1:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 62367    Do your research about the breed and the kennels that provide them, if you really really want a pure bred. If you are open to consider shelter pups, please give them a home. Pure bred pups usually have not problems finding homes but the mixed breeds at the shelters are put to sleep everyday for lack of one. One of the dogs I had as a child was a beagle mix puppy that someone tried to drown at a camp ground, along with a sibling. A group of Boy Scouts rescued the pups. The pups were running loose at the campground when my family arrived for a weekend. We returned home with Ginger. I loved her very much.
Date: 6/9/2004 10:25:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11348    Thanks for your comments everyone. Kelly, I live in Colorado and the winters are harsh. It's horrible to think of those poor things being out in such frigid temperatures. It just blows my mind that some people can be so cruel.
